The opposition in Taiwan has won the presidential election, Ma Ying-jeou is now president-elect.
TAIPEI, March 22 (Reuters) - To his fans, Taiwan's president-elect Ma Ying-jeou is telegenic, sophisticated and charming. To his foes, he is a foreign-born usurper whose loyalty to Taiwan is questionable.
Born in Hong Kong to mainland Chinese parents just half a year after China was taken over by the Communists, Ma and his family moved to Taiwan when he was just one.
After studying at New York University and Harvard University Law School, he had a brief stint on Wall Street, before returning to Taiwan and rising quickly through the ranks of the Nationalists, who ruled China before the Communist takeover.
The Kuomintang (KMT) party of Taiwan has won the presidential polls.
Ma Ying-jeou, the leader of the opposition party, won 58 per cent of the votes to make him the country's next president.
Ying-jeou formally takes over on May 20 when Chen Shui-bian, the outgoing president, steps down after serving a maximum of two terms.

Vinny, I like this story. It's good stuff. Our local CBC TV didn't mention the elections this morning, and I was wondering how it went. I think the Peoples' Republic scared them out of amalgamation talks.
