Illegal Haitians granted permission to stay a little longer

At the risk of sounding like Rush Limbaugh or Pat Robertson, I was taken back by the story that the US Government is granting permission for 100,000 to 200,000 Haitian illegal’s to stay for 18 months.

First, the Department of Homeland Security admits in this statement that its accurate accounting of Haitian illegal’s is plus or minus 50,000? For crying out loud, what are they doing here? How many other nation state groups of illegal’s are here at plus or minus 50% error in knowing what the hell is going on?

Osama bin Laden, I bet you really are living in Texas.

“5:22 p.m. Government extends temporary asylum to illegal Haitian immigrants -- updated 5:33 p.m.
The Obama administration announced Friday that it will allow an estimated 100,000 to 200,000 Haitians living in the United States illegally to stay and work in the country for 18 months as part of its response to Tuesday's earthquake, but warned Haitians that leaving the country now "will only bring more hardship to the Haitian people and nation."

Homeland Security Janet Napolitano said the decision to grant Temporary Protected Status to illegal immigrants from Haiti who were living in the United States as of January 12 was a gesture of compassion and an attempt to ensure that the flow of remittances and economic support to their devastated homeland continue.

"This is a disaster of historic proportions," Napolitano said in a 5 p.m. conference call, "Providing a temporary refuge for Haitian nationals who are currently in the United States and whose personal safety would be ended by returning to Haiti as part of this administration continue effort to support Haiti's recovery."

However, Napolitano coupled that message with a caution to Haitians now seeking refuge outside their country. While she declined to specify the consequences for those caught trying to enter the U.S. illegally, she said, "At this moment of tragedy in Haiti, it is tempting for people suffering in the aftermath of the earthquake to seek refuge elsewhere, but attempting to leave Haiti now will only bring more hardship to the Haitian people and nation."

It is not the decision to give Haitian's a break that is as troubling as the fact that so many are here illegally and we really are not sure about how many.

I agree. There is absolutely nothing to send them back to. Obama did the right thing.

One can argue that was true before the disaster.

I agree with the President's humane decision. The plaque inside the Statue of Liberty reads:

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
—Emma Lazarus, 1883, The New Colossus

If ever, now is the time for the homeless to stay.

As for what are the Haitian immigrants doing? After seeing the movie 'Food Inc.', v.youku.com/v_show/id_XMTQ1NTQwODY4.html ,it is likely many Haitian immigrants are working some of the toughest labor jobs in the U.S. - such as in one of the large industrial meat packing plants. The documentary shows footage of various illegal immigrant employees being arrested each day - but never in enough volume to hurt the company's line production.

Other Haitian immigrants, such as former Haitian refugee Michaëlle Jean, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Micha%C3%ABlle_Jean, may be pursuing multiple degrees and aspiring to civic office.

Should we blame the failed immigration policies of present and past Administrations? Or should we focus on an American value - compassion - now is the time.

True to a point. As a nation, we must come to grips with our capacity to address the needs of our population -- a huge surge on retirees, 664,000 homeless, healthcare--we are squandering money on wars while piling up enormous debt owed to the Chinese. So, the door may not close, but those who are allowed to enter must bring with them ability to add value to society. Some will be permitted for their protection as they may in need of such. Yet, there will be no more carte blanche.
