Robert Rizzo Faces 53 Counts in Bell, California Corruption Case

Mayor Oscar Hernandez; former city manager Robert Rizzo; former assistant city manager Angela Spaccia; former councilmembers George Cole and Victor Bello; and current councilmembers George Mirabal, Teresa Jacobo and Luis Artiga were all arrested today in connection with the Bell, Callifornia corruption case. However, Bell Police Chief Randy Adams was not arrested; Adams makes over $400,000 a year.

Robert Rizzo alone faces 53 counts of misappropriation of public funds and conflict of interest. Los Angeles District Attorney Steve Cooley described the Bell situation as "corruption on steroids".

Bell, California Officials Resign

Robert Rizzo's $784,637-per-year salary (closer to $1.5 million with benefits and extra compensation) sparked the investigation. Bell, California has a population of around 40,000 people.

He said that councilmembers, who earned salaries of nearly $100,000, received $1.2 million for "phantom meetings" -- many which never occurred or lasted only a minute or two.

California is full of financial abuses like this. There are tons of people getting six-figures in pensions for sitting at home and doing nothing. Some are getting more than $300,000 a year in pension money for doing nothing. That combined with overpaid bureaucrats is causing budget crises. There are people all over this country getting huge government checks for doing nothing. When you look at cutting a budget that's where you begin.
