Outcry over Polanski's detention

Politicians and Hollywood heavyweights have rallied behind director Roman Polanski following his arrest. French foreign minister Bernard Kouchner called the detention of the film-maker - a French citizen - in Switzerland a "bit sinister".
Really?! Seriously?! Outcry over the arrest of a child rapist?! Do my eyes deceive me? I fear that they do not!
Here are some of the reactions to Polanski's arrest for the rape of a 13 year old girl 30 years ago:
"We're calling on every film-maker we can to help fix this terrible situation," Weinstein said.
...
And British novelist Robert Harris described the arrest as "disgusting treatment".
...
Mr Polanski is directing a film adaptation of his book The Ghost. Mr Harris said the production team were "reeling from the news".
If Polanski wasn't a famous and revered film director, the only outcry would be that he hadn't been arrested and tried for this disgusting offence before. Instead, what we have is a load of rape apologists (let's not forgot that Polanski has admitted his guilt) demanding that a rapist escapes custody. I'm sure I'm not the only one who finds this hard to stomach.

Polanski has a home here in a famous ski resort and has traveled back and forth between Switzerland and France for the last 31 years without arrest. Am I missing the point. Don't these countries abide by international law? This man has had a warrent for his arrest and before now has not been arrested in either country or any other he has traveled to. Is the law different for different people? I have to ask, is it against the law to rape and drug a 13 year girl in Switzerland and France? What makes him different, is it just because he is a film director? I don't understand any of this.

Thanks for the recommendation and comment, Patricia. And that is really interesting what you are saying, Patricia. I have no idea how he passed freely before but Roy may well be right about someone, somewhere changing their mind or having it changed for them.

Thanks for the information about Polanski's travel, Patricia.
Strange that no one acted on the warrant before. Sounds as if someone who was protecting him changed his mind, finally got countermanded or was removed from power.
