The People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) gathered Monday morning near Central World shopping mall in the heart of Bangkok to distribute leaflets and video discs (VCDs) critical of the bloody police crackdown against demonstrators on October 7.

However, not many supporters of the anti-government group assembled in front of Central World when compared to its gathering in Silom and Sathorn business districts last Friday.

Many demonstrators, including street vendors, were wearing headbands with a Thai flag and making noises with plastic clappers, while the PAD was using about five vehicles with loudspeakers to publicise their anti-government campaign in front of the venue.

At the same time, security guards of Central World near the Royal Thai Police Headquarters were using steel fences to prevent the protesters from demonstrating inside the shopping mall.

However, the protesters led by the PAD did not move near the police headquarters, as the pro-government United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) supporters were planning to gather there as well, and clashes between both sides could break out.

PAD core leader Pibhob Dhongchai earlier reasserted that his group distrusted the government-appointed committee now probing on the causes of the October 7 incidents due to reports that the government tried to intervene and remove some of the 'straightforward' committee members.

Mr. Pibhob said the PAD trusted the findings of the National Human Rights Commission, a respected neutral body, which announced Friday that the government was responsible for having given the order to disperse, while the police were responsible for carrying out the action.

He said the group would rather entrust an independent investigative committee which could be set up by parliament and be comprised of members of the House of Representatives and senators, including the Opposition.
