Padang Indonesia: Tsunami Warning after 7.6 Earthquake

Thousand people buried under rubble in Padang West Sumatra reported on BBC Asia 10 minutes ago seeing that its late in the evening its going to take time for rescue crews to reach the area of destruction. No further news on the wires at present

West Sumatra (Indonesian: Sumatera Barat, abbreviated to Sumbar) is a province of Indonesia. It lies on the west coast of the island Sumatra, and borders the provinces of North Sumatra (Sumatera Utara) to the north, Riau and Jambi to the east, and Bengkulu to the southeast. It includes the Mentawai Islands off the coast. The capital of the province is Padang.

At least thirteen people were killed in the earthquake. Initially, a tsunami warning was released, but later it was canceled. The Jakarta Globe's website actually crashed under too-heavy traffic. Supposedly it's back up, but not loading for me at the moment.

It struck at around 5 p.m. local time, about 33 miles (53 kilometers) from Padang, the capital city of West Sumatra. Padang is home to more than 800,000 people.

The U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami advisory but later canceled it, citing sea-level readings.

BBC.com have just published the following story...

Thousands of people are trapped under rubble and at least 13 are dead after a strong earthquake shook the Indonesian island of Sumatra, officials say.

The epicentre was about 50km (30 miles) off the coast, near the city of Padang. It destroyed buildings and bridges.

A tsunami watch issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has been lifted.

It comes hours after a tsunami triggered by a separate earthquake in the South Pacific killed more than 100 people across a number of islands.

It looks bad its nigh time down here which does not help and of course the local authorities where caught out its going to be a long night for those trapped lets hope a tropic storm does not make this tragedy worst. Seeming there is a lot of pressure on the plates a little alarming to me as I live in this damn earthquake zone.
