Prime suspect a Pak-Taliban operative, local facilitators held

Lahore (PTI): The prime suspect in a terrorist assault on a police academy near here has revealed that all his accomplices were Afghans and information provided by him, a Pakistani Taliban operative, has led to the arrest of some "local facilitators", investigators said on Tuesday.

Gul Khan alias Ishrat Khan, a bearded man in his twenties who was captured by security forces while trying to target helicopters near the training centre on Monday, is an operative of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan and came to Lahore a few months ago to carry out the attack, the officials probing the incident said.

"Khan belongs to Taliban leader Baitullah Mehsud's group and came to Lahore from Afghanistan a few months ago. He carried out the attack with his fellow countrymen in connivance with local facilitators," Deputy Inspector General of Police Mushtaq Ahmed Sukhera, who is part of the investigation team, told PTI.

It is increasingly becoming clear that not the "foreigh hand", but the domestic heads and arms are behind the attack on the bloody  attack on Lahore Police School on 30th March 2009.Now it is confirmed by the Pak-Taliban's "commander" Mehsud.

Pakistan PM's advisor, Rahman Malik yesterday claimed that this attack can be attributed to Baitullah Mehsud. He drew a lot of flak from Pakistani public who think that India is behind these attacks.

Pak Taliban commander Baitullah Mehsud has claimed responsibility for the attack on the Manawan police academy near Lahore on Monday. Mehsud is

wanted in connection with the assassination of Pakistan’s former prime minister Benazir Bhutto in 2007. The US government had announced a reward of $5 million on any information about Mehsud.

Terrorist Masood Azhar’s group had earlier claimed responsibility for the attack.

I hope the captured terrorist has information for other potential targets

valid questions and concerns my friend.  Re Indo-Pak, I guess I have my version to explain the "why and who".. the lack of mutual trust, continued denial of home grown extremists in both countries, continual of subversive and disruptive activities and continued use of Afghanistan for our  proxy war.

We continue to claim complete righteousness and innocence for our selves and degrade, defame and demonise the other country. Once the national policy makers of both countries take the bold decision to stop this covert war of attrition against each other, these terrorists would die down eventually.

There will be a violent backlash from these fanatics but eventually Indo-Pak states will win. The next step will be more important to form a policy of mutual respect and trust to keep such things from happening.

As far as the funding is concerned, both India and Pakistan are covertly funding the dissidents fighting their respective states. There is also Saudi element involved in funding of violent and extremist Muslim organisations.

I must also add that in both countries .. there are some areas where people have genuine concerns and misgivings about the state and shouldn’t be dismissed just on the bases of "not suiting national interests"
Khalistan, Kashmir, Mizo land, Naga Land, Bangladesh, Balochistan and many more turned violent because the politicians didn’t address the issues and concerns.. India is a Subcontinent of many differing people we all have the right of our unique Identity, this right is recognised by the human rights of the UN charter. having a different Identity, religion and way of life doesn’t mean that some of us are evil or sub-human. It only means that we treat others the same way we want to be treated.

Dismissing and hating others just on the bases of  different religion, colour and race makes us bigots like Al-Qaida, RSS and the former US Texan cowboy administration. We are far more richer in culture, traditions, festivals and religions. We can do far better than many prosperous and peaceful countries of the world. we just need to change the attitude.

sorry for spamming lol

This operation was to break the confidence of Pakistani security forces as they are (though reluctantly) running successful operations against the Taliban. Because rather than American drones and NATO Forces, attacks by Pakistani forces are more effective as they are familiar with the terrain and the psychology of the terrorists. If  you look at Iraq and Afghanistan, the factions of Al Queda used to attack (still do) police / military training schools with devastating effects and by that they drain up the human resources available.

I think they do not have expected such swift and well coordinated action by the Pakistan forces (Para-commandos, Rangers ). They would have expected to have a stand off as happened in Mumbai - and by that open up a news channel in NP :-). I must congratulate Pakistani Forces to overpower the terrorists this fast.

As Amaad said, the captured terrorist can give out more details. But as happened in the case of Mumbai, I don't think the supplied information do any good.

Let us wait and watch.
