Pakistan abandons garrison plans in Occupied Baluchistan
Pakistan has ruled over the restive and area-wise largest Baluchistan province through what is called the cantonment policy. There are already 18 major military cantonments run by non-Baluch Punjabi officers and soldiers and there were plans to build more cantonments, especially in the Marri and Bugti tribal heartland.
Baluchistan was annexed at the point of gun on March 27, 1948 and a war of liberation is being led there by Baluch national heroes Nawabzada Hyrbyair Marri and Sardar Brahamdagh Bugti, which enjoys the blessings of the De Jure Ruler of Baluchistan, Khan of Kalat Suleman Daud.
Another popular politician and former chief minister, Sardar Akhtar Mengal says he fully supports the liberation struggle, though his party Baluchistan National Party is demanding the right to self-determination.
The Pakistani government has abandoned its plans to build a new garrison in Dera Bugti and Kohlu in eastern Balochistan, the army has confirmed.
Correspondents say that the government has now fulfilled a major demand of Baloch nationalist groups.
Even pro-Pakistan politicians in the National Party like Senator Hasil Bizenjo, a close ally of former premier Nawaz Sharif are extremely wary of Islamabad's plans for Baluchistan and the ongoing brutalities against the Baluch masses.
Mir Hasil Khan Bizenjo, senior vice-president of the National Party, said: ‘It is a good decision, but atrocities committed by security forces against the Baloch people may offset the impact of this decision.’
He said that successive governments had not paid any heed to the demand by political parties of Balochistan for abandoning the cantonment plan.
The Baluch struggle for liberation has reached a crucial phase as more and more women are joining the resistance. On September 6, The Frontier Constabulary fired upon a peaceful rally that left a student Mukhtar Baluch killed and several women and children killed.
