Pakistan Coup? Rumors Swirl that Pakistan Coup Threatens Zardari
Rumors continue to swirl that about a Pakistan coup after the country's defense minister was barred from leaving the country. A spokesperson for Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari had denied the Pakistan coup rumors.
The Pakistan government has also been rocked a recent supreme court ruling that denied amnesty to Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari (he is, however, protected by presidential immunity). The National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Pakistan's top anti-corruption agency, has also barred nearly 250 people from leaving Pakistan.
The Supreme Court ruling appears to overturn the controversial amnesty that was installed by previous president, Pervez Musharraf. The lifting of the amnesty creates the possibility of Zardari's allies.
Customs officials reportedly prevented Pakistani Defence Minister Ahmed Mukhtar from boarding a plane for an official visit to China.
To add to the Pakistan coup rumors, Husain Haqqani, Pakistan's ambassador to the United States, told CNN that he hopes there would not be a coup.
