We see a lot on the world news about Muslim punishments for women, and like many people, I criticise the severity of the sentences imposed.

Reading the headline to this made me wonder again at the mentality of the Muslim traditions where crime and punishment are concerned.

Reading on and seeing the reasons for it, I still feel it's barbaric, but at least I can see why this time, I just don't see any way that it can be justified though, it reduces the justice system to the same level as the crime.

A Pakistani court has ordered that two men have their ears and noses cut off, as punishment for doing the same to a woman who refused to marry one of them.

The two brothers were found guilty of kidnapping 20-year-old Fazeelat Bibi, one of their cousins, in September.

The judge in Lahore also sentenced them to life in prison.

Sentence was passed on Monday under a rarely invoked Islamic law dating from the 1980s. In the past similar sentences have been revoked on appeal.

'Eye for an eye'

Government prosecutor Ehtisham Qadir said the punishment had been awarded in accordance with the Islamic principle of "an eye for an eye".

In a multi cutural world who are we to tell this culture how to behave? They probably think western justice is weak and ineffectual.Sounds harsh to me, but we aren't their judges, only their god is

Sounds perfectly reasonable to me. Anyone who sadistically mutilates another is the worst type of sicko and deserves to have the same done to them in my opinion. I bet these two men wish they lived in the UK, they'd probably have been released after 3 years and then free to laugh at and terrorize the woman whos life they've ruined.

If the offended individual responds by hurting the offender in a similar manner it could be understandable. BUT courts are established for the very reason to handle clashes/ disputes in a civilized manner. Even if the court wanted to make an example out of the offenders, there could have been more intelligent ways to teach them a lesson.

Such misinterpretations/ manifestation of any religion would mutilate its image. Whereas the Quran has given the right to any offended party for asking for similar treatment to the offender, STILL IT IS CLEARLY MENTIONED IN EVERY SUCH VERSE THAT " IT IS BETTER TO PARDON/ FORGIVE-- IF YOU UNDERSTAND" that shows that preference lies in Pardon and controlling the human desire for revenge. BUT people generally use and twist religious provisions to suit their desires.

These idiots need to be told that once we avenge any wrongdoing then the offender is pardoned from the sin as no one can be punished twice for the same crime. The best way to avenge is to leave it on the Almighty as no worldly punishment compares to Hell.
