The security forces in Pakistan have fought a lengthy battle with militants who storm a naval base in the city of Karachi overnight. 12 people were reported to have been killed. Security sources said that after around twelve hours during which numerous explosions and sporadic gunfire was heard coming from the air base, the siege there is now over. Pakistani troops are carrying out a mopping up operation to catch any militants who may still be present. The Pakistani Taliban said they carried out the raid to avenge the death on Osama Bin Laden. It is the most audacious attack on the military in Pakistan since the country's army headquarters was besieged in late 2009 and will once again raise questions about the safety of Pakistan’s nuclear installations.
