Whatever doubts were cast over Zimbabwe's on-field ability after they lost the ODI series 2-1 after upsetting Pakistan - after 15 years, it must be added - in the first match have been pushed into the background as the row over player dues was escalated ahead of the first Test starting Tuesday. Andy Waller, Zimbabwe's coach, has admitted that the pay issue facing the team will be a major distraction in the opening Test and this could indeed prove the focal point after an agreement was reached on the eve of the match. Especially considering Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) has yet to transfer the money to the players' accounts and at least one player, Sean Williams, has refused to play the first Test. There is also some doubt over the participation of Zimbabwe captain Brendan Taylor, who is on paternity leave, though he told ESPNcricinfo that the rest would play on the word of ZC.
Zimbabwe are less than two years returned to the Test fold after a self-imposed six-year exile because of the country's failed cricket structure, but the problems that forced it to give up Tests in 2005 linger. After threatening to go on strike before Pakistan arrived, the Zimbabwean players then refused to train on the eve of the final ODI owing to unpaid monthly salaries. The third ODI went on, but the players gave the board until Monday to make the outstanding payments. That has not yet happened, but the Test is on.
As if that wasn't trouble enough, Zimbabwe have to find a way to improve their cricket. They lost the Twenty20 series but then upset Pakistan in the first ODI, only to lose the next two to go into the five-day fixtures remaining definitive underdogs. Thus, against a side they they have lost to six times out of eight Tests since 1995, they battle history and form.
