Malala Yousufzai is a young 14 year old girl who challenged Taliban religious fundamentalists in Pakistan. She has blogged for three years against them wanting to return the land she lives in, back to the 12th century. So, she was shot. She was shot getting off her school bus. She was shot because she attends school. She was shot for calling them out as the reactionary fanatics that they are.

She was shot for trying to create some kind of Enlightenment in the Islamic world (or her small part of it) that we Westerners have enjoyed for the last 400 years. She was shot because of men who want to impose their religions beliefs on everyone else. She was shot because of religious extremism. She was shot and if she dies, it will be one more life in the long list that religious superstition and dogma have killed since the time men learned to make myths and gds to justify their actions and ignorance.
