In the Aftermath of Senator John McCain’s announcement of his choice for a Vice- Presidential Running Mate, and after the SHOCK AND AWE affect his decision has apparently had on the WORLD, it would seem that a little perspective is needed. Far be it from me to make such an attempt at providing any thoughts of my own regarding this historic event, ...BUT has anyone noticed that even with all of the strides that women the whole world over have made to be treated equal with men, that there should be ANY reaction to the thought of a woman being president or vice president is an absolute reflection of the OLD ANTIQUATED SEXIST IDEAS that obviously still plague us all.

Did anyone else notice that when Sen. McCain introduced this "WOMAN”, he prefaced all of her vague credentials by stating that she is a "mother of five"? . The fact that she is a mother of five is wonderful, but what does that have to do with her professional qualifications? He could have only noted that she is the Governor of Alaska or maybe he could have chosen to expound a little more on her track record as a public servant {maverick}.

Men are rarely defined by their parental roles in societies. The male is generally defined by his credentials in terms of leadership as it relates to his job, his opinions, political disposition, or his accomplishments in whatever areas he may show interest. Has anyone ever seen a male judge or a lawyer, or Doctor, PUBLIC SERVANT introduced as "the father of five"?

In   many societies around the world {this one included} the ideas of women or females may not be respected just because they are not MEN. When women express interest in areas that do not involve child rearing or other domestic tasks that women are traditionally expected to perform, the rest of society will frown upon her and take the attitude that she is not equipped to handle tasks that men have traditionally been know to do nor is it appropriate for her to be interested in such things.

Unfortunately the mind of sexism seems to be at play even in the Historical implications of these weeks’ announcements. You see, Governor Sarah Palin is an accomplished WOMAN, in a better world we would not have to note her gender at all, her works should be enough to speak to her importance. The fact that people are still GASPING because a WOMAN is being asked to perform a task that has always been performed by a MAN is PROOF POSITIVE OF THE LINGERING SICKNESS OF SEXISM.

In this male dominated society that we live in, the role of the female has always been clearly defined. She should be interested in being beautiful {sexy} vessels that have babies, cook, clean and only express the opinions of a male counterpart. She is to support her husband or significant other {male} in pursuit of his interests and sacrifice her own.

Senator McCain has chosen a woman who ALMOST exemplifies every demeaning attribute that women have worked to escape in this country. The old mind of sexism seems to be very prevalent in the Senators own ideas regarding what makes up a professional "woman" candidate for vice- president of the United States.

Sarah Palin is in conjunction with being the Governor of Alaska, an ex "beauty queen", who has no formal training or knowledge of U.S Constitutional Law. How could she uphold what she has NO working Knowledge of? Apart from her service of about 20 months as Governor of Alaska she does not seem to have any real experience as a TRUE LEADER. She is consistently inconsistent in her political standings regarding what she supports or does not support, she changes her mind frequently when asked about her political positions. I only mention this because in our male dominated atmosphere we have {women} been deemed the "Weaker" more delicate group within the human species who are considered incapable of making up their minds. {Stereotype}

If the idea behind choosing a woman as a running mate, was meant to sway the female supporters of Senator Hillary Clinton in the direction of John McCain, it should be noted that Hillary Clinton does not fit into any of the traditional stereotypical molds that women have worked to diminish. Even if we all wanted to only refer to her as The WIFE of Bill Clinton, we could not deny or overlook her credentials and Professional qualifications to leadership. There is NO comparison between Gov. Palin and Senator Hillary Clinton. They in fact polarize one another in some striking ways.

Yes he chose a woman, {big Whoop!} what does his choice in a "woman” vice - president say about him or his views of women? Well we just need to look at his choice for a WIFE, who we can successfully compare to Gov. Sarah Palin, as Cindy McCain was also a Beauty Pageant Contestant.

Of course this is only my opinion, and since I am only a GIRL I should probably keep my thoughts to myself right? {WINK}

Resonant Earth, I like this story. It's good stuff.

I think there are some controversial words here in your piece, although really good discussion points.

I had the same thoughts that you had about the reaction of her being named as VP. There shouldn't be that much hoopla around her but there is, for the reasons you have outlined above.

Good piece - I enjoyed it.

... 'no formal training or knowledge of U.S Constitutional Law,'  this may be true, but she's awful darned good at snowmobiles !

And, pretty too !

What more do you want from a woman president ?

Very well said.

It would be one of life's cruel ironies if Palin broke through that glass ceiling that Clinton did such a good job of cracking.

If there really are many Clinton supporters defecting, they should remember the question she asked them -"Were you in it for me?"

If they were in it for her or if they were in it for themselves, they missed the whole point and might as well join the beauty queen band wagon.

If this is the case it would set us back to the DARK AGES!!! let us hope that we will not support someone just because they have the same body parts that we have.

McCain's choice of VP is a slap on the face of the DNC who hated Hillary so much that they are willing to trash her despite the fact she won the popular vote. (18 million) Ted Kennedy hated the Clintons so much that he made sure Caroline be part of the VP selection committe so she could block her entry and chances to be the Democratic VP nominee. We now know that the Democratic party will never ever allow a woman to be VP, much less, The President. Obama snobbed Hillary and would surely blame the Clintons if McCain/Palin clobbers him in November. You can say whatever you want on McCains decision but it will not change the fact that the arrogant Democrats have shown the world that women have no place in the politics.of governance.

You know though, perhaps Obama should have chosen Hillary as a VP, yeah they had their fights, but it may have assured a victory, everyone says Obama, Hillary Palin would freeze under an Emergency, at least with Hillary as a VP Bill Clinton could have been a resource Obama and Hillary could have used when push comes to shove, and like you say perhaps arrogance on Obama and his party may be their downfall.

The Democrats are doing something that has NEVER been done in this country before, they are galvanising the American PEOPLE to put the needs of the COUNTRY above their personal feelings of ijury and insult. McCains pick is NO reflection on the DNC, It is HOWEVER a sad SAD reflection of what he thinks about women and another PROOF that the ideas of Republicans are DEAD. It is time for a complete change. Another thing to note here is that when we are thinking of change we have to think about the fact that the PEOPLE of AMERICA WANT AND DESIRE REAL CHANGE.... Unfortunatley Sen. CLinton did not really fit the image of change that young people in this country invision. For as long as I can remember, there has been either a BUSH OR A CLINTON IN OFFICE. To vote another Cinton into office is to say that we accept the old ways. None of this is a discredit to Sen Clinton or to anyone involved it is simply a confirmation that the GENERAL WILL OF THE POPULTION OF THIS COUNTRY IS STEEPED IN DISATISFACTION, change is INEVITABLE.....just let go, breathe in , breathe out......accept the change it will lower your blood pressure!!

Eleanor Roosevelt

Miriam "Ma" Fergusen

Shirley Chisolm

Barbara Jordan

Geraldine Ferraro

Bella Abzug

Ann Richards

Hillary Clinton

Nancy Pelosi

These are just some of the names that come to mind immediately when thinking of those women the Democrats have decided "no place in the politics. (sic) of governance."

With the exception of Hillary Clinton, none of the other women listed came in the AFTERMATH of EIGHT YEARS OF GEORGE BUSH JR. !!!

It's funny how McCain picking a woman as his running mate can be contorted into a slap in the face of "womens' rights." I guess the only women who count in the equation of "womens' rights" are liberal women.

0
Resonant Earth

Well It is "Funny", and his choice is the real  contortion, he is trying to contort this woman into a SUITABLE vice - president, there is NOTHING any one can do to make this materialize, not even "LIBERAL WOMEN", the facts are crystal clear and she is the one who is SHINING as a bright illumination of contradictions and stereotypes, and that IS a slap in the face of womens efforts!

Resonant Earth, I like this story. It's good stuff.

I agree to a certain extent..."the play for disenfranchised Hillary supporters." Resonant; the fact remains McCain did not pick her for her Political Experiences, or her Motherly -Woman you think "said discriminative trait". Its about Oil. It's about keeping the War Machine lubed and primed, while making Americans think McCain is drilling for Oil in Alaska for the American people. http://www.kansascity.com/444/story/773574.html

Make no doubt about it, it's about Oil. Now with the US at odds in Georgia, having loss control of pipline resources the Caspian Area, they are looking for support in Oil Rich areas, such as Alaska. All politics is connected in some fashion, and we can remember the Prime Minister of Canada is heading to secure Canadian rights for drilling in the North. In other words he must have caught wind of the Palin nomination and they mean to make the border lines clear when things start panning out...that is if McCain wins or is successful in stealing this election. Her inexperience is allowed because of the pull she has in getting the rights to drill in Alaska....scandalous indeed.
