Steve Schmidt, former chief campaign strategist for John McCain, said in a discussion that Sarah Palin would be a "catastrophic" choice for the Republican Party in 2012.

Steve Schmidt was a guest in First Draft of History conference last week. He is the highest ranking member of McCain's inner circle who openly criticizes Sarah Palin. In the discussion Schmidt again took a shot at Palin:

"I think that she has talents, but my honest view is that she would not be a winning candidate for the Republican Party in 2012, and in fact, were she to be the nominee, we would have a catastrophic election result."

"In the year since the election has ended, she has done nothing to expand her appeal beyond the base ... The independent vote is going to be up for grabs in 2012. That middle of the electorate is going to be determinative of the outcome of the elections. I just don't see that if you look at the things she has done over the year... that she is going to expand that base in the middle."

Video of Steve Schmidt spoke about Palin as 2012 GOP nominee.

Immediately after Schmidt's remark, former Democratic consultant Bob Shrum added, "I'm not a strategist anymore, I teach at the Wagner school, but let me endorse Sarah Palin for the Republican presidential nomination in 2012."

Schmidt admits that Sarah Palin has supporters, but thinks it's "inconceivable" that she could be elected as the president of the United States.
“I don’t think it’s inconceivable that she could be the Republican nominee for president of the United States,” Mr. Schmidt said. “I think it’s almost inconceivable that she could be elected president of the United States.”

Steve Schmidt instead sees someone who is socially tolerant and fiscally conservative independent candidates to surface in 2010 and 2012.

Schmidt has experience being an expert at "catastrophic".
