Palin disclosures raise questions with few Answers

ST. PAUL - A series of disclosures about Gov. Sarah Palin, Senator John McCain’s choice as running mate, called into question on Monday how thoroughly Mr. McCain had examined her background before putting her on the Republican presidential ticket.

On Monday morning, Ms. Palin and her husband, Todd, issued a statement saying that their 17-year-old unmarried daughter, Bristol, was five months pregnant and that she intended to marry the father.

Among other less attention-grabbing news of the day: it was learned that Ms. Palin now has a private lawyer in a legislative ethics investigation in Alaska into whether she abused her power in dismissing the state’s public safety commissioner; that she was a member for two years in the 1990s of the Alaska Independence Party, which has at times sought a vote on whether the state should secede; and that Mr. Palin was arrested 22 years ago on a drunken-driving charge.

Aides to Mr. McCain said they had a team on the ground in Alaska now to look more thoroughly into Ms. Palin’s background. A Republican with ties to the campaign said the team assigned to vet Ms. Palin in Alaska had not arrived there until Thursday, a day before Mr. McCain stunned the political world with his vice-presidential choice.

Although the McCain campaign said that Mr. McCain had known about Bristol Palin’s pregnancy before he asked her mother to join him on the ticket and that he did not consider it disqualifying, top aides were vague on Monday about how and when he had learned of the pregnancy, and from whom.

While there was no sign that her formal nomination this week was in jeopardy, the questions swirling around Ms. Palin on the first day of the Republican National Convention, already disrupted by Hurricane Gustav, brought anxiety to Republicans who worried that Democrats would use the selection of Ms. Palin to question Mr. McCain’s judgment and his ability to make crucial decisions.

At the least, Republicans close to the campaign said it was increasingly apparent that Ms. Palin had been selected as Mr. McCain’s running mate with more haste than McCain advisers initially described.

A rushed pick?
Up until midweek last week, some 48 to 72 hours before Mr. McCain introduced Ms. Palin at a Friday rally in Dayton, Ohio, Mr. McCain was still holding out the hope that he could name as his running mate a good friend, Senator Joseph I. Lieberman, independent of Connecticut, a Republican close to the campaign said. Mr. McCain had also been interested in another favorite, former Gov. Tom Ridge of Pennsylvania.

But both men favor abortion rights, anathema to the Christian conservatives who make up a crucial base of the Republican Party. As word leaked out that Mr. McCain was seriously considering the men, the campaign was bombarded by outrage from influential conservatives who predicted an explosive floor fight at the convention and vowed rejection of Mr. Ridge or Mr. Lieberman by the delegates.

Perhaps more important, several Republicans said, Mr. McCain was getting advice that if he did not do something to shake up the race, his campaign would be stuck on a potentially losing trajectory.

With time running out — and as Mr. McCain discarded two safer choices, Gov. Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota and former Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts, as too predictable — he turned to Ms. Palin. He had his first face-to-face interview with her on Thursday and offered her the job moments later.

“They didn’t seriously consider her until four or five days from the time she was picked, before she was asked, maybe the Thursday or Friday before,” said a Republican close to the campaign. “This was really kind of rushed at the end, because John didn’t get what he wanted. He wanted to do Joe or Ridge.”

Mr. McCain’s advisers said repeatedly on Monday that Ms. Palin was “thoroughly vetted,” a process that would have included a review of all financial and legal records as well as a criminal background check. A McCain aide said that the campaign was well aware of the ethics investigation and that it had looked into it.

People familiar with the process said Ms. Palin had responded to a standard form with more than 70 questions.“It was obviously something that anybody Googling Sarah Palin knew was in the news and there was a very thorough vetting done on that and also on the daughter,” the aide said.

Locals say no one talked to them
Mark Salter, Mr. McCain’s closest adviser, said in an e-mail message that Ms. Palin had been interviewed by Arthur B. Culvahouse Jr., a veteran Washington lawyer in charge of the vice-presidential vetting process for Mr. McCain, as well as by other lawyers who worked for Mr. Culvahouse. Mr. Salter did not respond to an e-mail message asking if Ms. Palin had told Mr. Culvahouse and his lawyers that her daughter was pregnant.

In Alaska, several state leaders and local officials said they knew of no efforts by the McCain campaign to find out more information about Ms. Palin before the announcement of her selection, Although campaigns are typically discreet when they make inquiries into potential running mates, officials in Alaska said Monday they thought it was peculiar that no one in the state had the slightest hint that Ms. Palin might be under consideration.

“They didn’t speak to anyone in the Legislature, they didn’t speak to anyone in the business community,” said Lyda Green, the State Senate president, who lives in Wasilla, where Ms. Palin served as mayor.

Representative Gail Phillips, a Republican and former speaker of the State House, said the widespread surprise in Alaska when Ms. Palin was named to the ticket made her wonder how intensively the McCain campaign had vetted her.

“I started calling around and asking, and I have not been able to find one person that was called,” Ms. Phillips said. “I called 30 to 40 people, political leaders, business leaders, community leaders. Not one of them had heard. Alaska is a very small community, we know people all over, but I haven’t found anybody who was asked anything.”

Great choice! All the propaganda by the Marxist scum only aids the cause of McCain and exposes the character of the Obama lovers. When Americans see how low they can go it will aid Sarah and McCain!

"Marxist"?

That's so cute and quaint.

Palin's first address to the American contained a whopping big lie and it was downhill from there.  She was even attacked by some of those "Marxists" Republicans up in Alaska (Alaskan Republican elected officials actually not under indictment).

The one advantage Palin has over others on McCain/Bush's VP short list is that she brings with her her own corruption scandal, even with that ever-popular Republican family value "abuse of power".

The items in this article should receive more scrutiny than Governor Palin's private family issues.

Exploration of these realities are fair game and should be of interest to the American people.

I agree.

I feel very bad that the 17 year old daughter has been brought into the limelight - most especially because she's chosen a hard road for any teenager moving into adulthood - but adding to it that now she's the spotlight of a nation looking at her mom (and subsequently her - even if it's not a good idea) and I question the good judgement of her mother.

IMHO, it screams that her mom is too self distracted and self centered - to realize the impact that this may have on her children - especially now.

And, people can deem this as sexist or not - but I said the same thing of Hillary back in the day - and of Obama now - DO these people have enough time as PARENTS with their children?  In this case - I'm not so sure.  If you look at the job that Sarah's husband does - you'll realize that working in the oil fields half a year and being out on fishing boats the other half means long hours (depending on the job - weeks/months) away from the children.  With her being Governor (now potential VP) who is raising the kids?  The Nanny?

No, it shouldn't matter - but in reality, any time a person makes a decision to have a child /family - the raising of the children comes first - before political carreer, before whatever else.  That's the parental responsibility.

Yes, a 17 year old will do what they will - but I wonder how much of this is the Nanny raising the children - or the 17 year old being stuck raising brothers and sisters - subsequently - feeling like they're adult enough (or needing to rebel and get out of the household) to start a family of their own....

No, I'm not judging the 17 year old - I feel so bad for her - I'm judging her VP mother, and saying that maybe she doesn't have the "family values" that she claims she does.

The Palin daughter's circumstances represent a divergence and dichotomy that has to be addressed by the Republican Party.

The articulated platform upon which the Party has run, which includes abstinence as a part of offered family values, unfortunately, places these latest sets of clearly personal and private realities at center stage.

In this instance, let's hope, as suggested by Senator Obama, that this specific contradiction occurring within Governor Palin's family, as those covering the campaigns go in search of stories, is no longer pursued.

There also is the judgment and values factor of -

"Honey, I am going to run for vice president and that means your face and your pregnancy will be spread all the world and held up to ridicule and nasty attacks.  That's ok, isn't it?"

Who knows?  Maybe the child said - "Go for it, mom!"

Maybe moms know best.

I didn't want to go there but, you're right.

It should have been reasonably assumed, by the Palin family, that the daughter's pregnancy would come under international scrutiny because of her mother's selection and acceptance of the offer to place her on the Republican ticket, not so much for the reality itself, teens become pregnant every day but, for who the teenager is in the scheme of things.

Of course, this angle is serving as a great distraction from the important issues.

Maybe that was/is the plan.

Very true.

I was also thinking - whatever happened to the days when a teenage unmarried pregnant 17 year old daughter brought shame and horror to the parents - and where you tried to support your child, but you didn't go tell the world that you're "a proud grandparent to be".

I wonder - being that my little brother was 3 days turned 18 years old when his first son was born - she was a month over 17.... I remember my parents reaction being one of initial shock, talking with both him and her about their future and all the options, and giving them a huge lecture about how difficult their lives were going to be (they both quit school and never went back).

When asked if they would like to be grandparents at the time, both of my parents said "I'm proud of them for taking on their responsibilities, and if it all works out, I'll be a proud grandparent.  I'm not very happy with them for getting themselves into this situation, as I would have liked to be a grandparent under different conditions." In the end, the pair did get married - and they are super parents.

Just like Obama's life with Ayers should be explored too.  I agree.

Junk like this also is part of the plan.

However, this time, the wizards who brew up these lies may have cried "wolf!" one too many times.  Of course, mainstream exposure is not what they really want.  What the demons of the dark side of GOP politics want is the whispering campaign that includes weird charges such as these followed by - "and he IS black, you know".

Why so much interest in paltry Alaska state politics, when Obama presents us with decades of corruption, scandals with the likes of Ayers, Rezko, Annenberg Challenge, Pastor Wright, Louis Farrahkhan, Father Phleger, Frank Davis, Indonesian/Kenyan/US citizenship, Mayor Daley, Al-Sammarae, ACORN abuses, ect., etc., etc. ???

[chuckle]

Typical shuck and jive.

You forgot that Obama also is an alien Muslim who is a sleeper agent for the Lost Continent of Atlantis and plans to force the United States to convert to Judaism and follow fundamental Hindu beliefs, except on Christmas Day, when all will be forced to convert to Taoism for a day.

Yep, that would be Biden.

PALIN IS A LIAR.

I don't care one whit about her family.  I didn't care one whit about the garbage that was slung at the Clintons and is being slung at the Obamas.  It doesn't matter.

Palin lied.  Palin double-crossed her own supporters behind their back.  Palin is not a conservative crusader against earmarks; she has chased after them unabashedly as governor.  She is anti-abortion, anti-gay rights, anti-polar bears and anti-First Amendment.

I think those are issues.  I think her double-crossing and lying about earmarks is one of the things the McCaine people should have looked into.

However, McCain may be spinning so much these days that even his staff is unsure where he stands.

Ayers does matter big time.

There are a few twisted individuals who can't let that go, true.  I don't know if you are one of them or simple aspire to be.

However, outside of yelling "The sky is falling!" you have yet to present credible proof.

Dunkel---And Edwards really cares about the poor, except when he's busy building multi-million dollar mansions, and banging his "videographer"

You know, once again, some people just don't get it.

John "Songbird" McCain embarrasses so many peoplebecause they can't find anything good to say about his flip-flopping career, his inability to remember how many home his sugar mommy owns or his $400 loafers.  Now, these same people are disappointed once again now that they have discovered that his running mate is a liar and ran with Ted Stevens.

So, all those poor people can do is go around attacking others with meaningless or, more likely, made up attacks - the more crude and vulgar the better.

It's sad, really.  However, that is the legacy of McCain/Bush.

Dunkel--And I suppose you believe Obama was thoroughly vetted by the NYT, NBC,CBS, ABC, CNN, LA Times, Wash Post,  etc.?   And when you are presented with documented information to illustrate Obama is a ultra-liberal, socialist, with quasi-militant African Liberation Theology roots cultivated by Rev. Jeremiah Wright, you simply ignore the facts.   Obama's number one group of supporters is trial lawyers, is that not a concern to you?  Well, considering Obama has received support from; Castro,  Chavez, Hamas,  FARC, North Korea(Kim Jung Ill), Moamar Khadaffi(Libya), Daniel Ortega(Nicaragua), Rashid Khalidi,  Arab American Action Network, Louis Farrakhan, Ali Abunimah,  Jodie Evans, Malik Zulu Shabazz(New Black Panthers), Hatem el-Hady,  don't you wonder why?   You may not have heard Obama mention that these people support him, but they all have stated their support on his website.

As I said . . . sad.

You forgot to mention the Romulans.

They find out EVERYTHING !!! before they make a move like this ... don't kid yourselves ...

All this 'cutesy-controversy' over a pregnant daughter is definately a calculated diversion from anything that might be regarded as discussion of a substantive issue ...

They knew that anybody whose ever been an oversexed 17-year old would be caught up in the initial gossipy uproar ( which they hope will go on the longer the better ) and then forget about it afterwards with a wink and a nod ...

I think maybe they knew alot of it, but to quote the article -

"A Republican with ties to the campaign said the team assigned to vet Ms. Palin in Alaska had not arrived there until Thursday, a day before Mr. McCain stunned the political world with his vice-presidential choice."

I'm thinking maybe they didn't know everything - or if they did, are hoping that america would be more swayed to say "oh poor Sarah Palin, the woman with a down syndrome baby and pregnant 17 year old daughter.  She's so one of us.... I think we should vote for her".  Thing is that it just opened up a can of worms of other people going "humm.  YIKES."
