The Dems have wisely held back their fire since the Alaskan moosehunter Sarah Palin sashayed into town. The Obama camp is standing down, letting the media and the blogosphere do their dirty work for them.

But once Palin speaks tonight, it's imperative for the Dems to answer in kind and not fear to unleash their most effective attack dogs -- not just Joe Biden, a Delaware Destroyer who knows how to slash and gash, but Barack Obama himself. He's the one with the glass-jaw reputation; once Palin delivers a roundhouse punch, Obama's got to ignore the niceties of sexual politics and give as good as he gets.

Nothing would be more humiliating for the Dems than for Obama to be beat up in a political street fight by someone named "Sarah."

If the Dems do a Harry Reid and meekly "stick to the issues," they will lose the momentum that's been gaining ever since McCain made his problematic pick last Friday.

Rick Davis, McCain's campaign manager, has thrown down the gauntlet: This election is not about the issues, but personalities, values, and fitness to lead, he told The Washington Post. The Dems' response: a tepid protest that didn't address the basic, unvarnished truth about this election: Davis is right.

With McCain's VP selection, the experience argument has been neutralized, and that's good thing for the Dems. No longer is this election solely a referendum on Barack Obama and his qualifications, judgment, and character. By choosing a novice like Palin, it's now as much a referendum on John McCain and Sarah Palin, and their judgment and fitness to lead.

Before, all McCain had to do to win was prove to voters that he's not Geoerge Bush, and that Obama lacks sufficient experience and seasoning to be president. But now, by picking Palin to be his "heartbeat away," McCain has ceded his best argument against Obama, while raising more questions about his own presidential bona fides -- something that was largely taken for granted prior to the injection of Sarah Palin into the presidential equation.

And guess what? Since McCain's selection of an inexperienced ideologue with considerable personal and political baggage, Obama is winning on the very metric that Rick Davis set forth.

The first tracking polls after the Democratic convention showed only a modest post-convention bounce for Obama-Biden. That looked to be an ominous sign -- until McCain made his VP pick. Now Obama-Biden is up by a solid six points in the RealClearPolitics.com national average.

This "Palin Effect" on the polls raises a troubling question for the Republicans: Is Alaska's Annie Oakley charming the electorate along with those hard-right GOP delegates? Maybe not.

But the Dems can't look at the polls and sit back complacently. Once Palin fires off her fusillade, "Joebama" must aim carefully when they shoot back, being careful not to attack her tone or demeanor, but the specific arguments she offers to make her case.

In voters' minds, the biggest question mark about the Democratic ticket isn't where the party stands on the issues, but whether Barack Obama can stand and deliver in battle. Joe Biden doesn't top the ticket; Barack does.

Backing off from a fight because the opponent has different plumbing would be a huge tactical error. Women can fight dirty, too, and this Alaska scrapper can rumble.

It's got to be tit for tat, Barack. Can you "man up" to an alpha female? You're a cool cat -- but this is going to be a catfight. You'd better sharpen your claws and not be a "fraidy cat" -- because this kitty knows how to scratch.

Oh, by the way: Get Political still believes Palin will withdraw her name from consideration -- if not tonight, then within a week or so.  The damage to McCain is building by the day. And how else to explain bringing the unwed father-to-be of daughter Bristol Palin's baby to Minneapolis for a family portrait?  Will anyone even notice John McCain at his own convention?  This is now a true "family circus."

BUT WILL THE ELECTION EVEN MATTER?  Not when government-supported "vigilante injustice" squads are "gang stalking" American citizens, making a mockery of the rule of law:
