Palm Beach County Revises Law Park Gun Law: Gun Ban in Palm Beach County Park Lifted
Picnic basket, check; Frisbee, check; 9mm Glock, check - that is the new reality in Palm Beach Clounty Florida. Palm Beach County City has revised a law that banned guns from Palm Beach County parks including sports fields, beaches, camp sites, and parks.
Apparently, the change in the gun law for parks was triggered because the county finally complied with a long existing state law.
I do take my kids [to county parks] … I'm not too happy about it," said Commissioner Shelley Vana, a Democrat, who joined in the unanimous vote for the parks rules change despite her misgivings. "I'm very sad for our parks."
The National Rifle Association contends that county officials knew, or should have known, about the discrepancy for years. NRA lobbyist Marion Hammer said Palm Beach County is one of a number of local governments that have been "thumbing their noses at state law."
County Commissioner Steven Abrams, who helped push for the rules change, said the county has to follow state law.
"We are talking about permitted weapons. I personally don't have a problem with permitted weapons being allowed," said Abrams, a Republican.
