Paraguay: Ex Bishop Fernando Lugo takes office as President
Churuguara, Edo.Falcon,Venezuela, 15 August 2008. This morning, Ex Bishop Fernando Lugo took office as the new President of Paraguay. Left leaning Lugo was elected President - for a fve year term- on 20 April 2008 and after removing Partido Colorado from a 60 year tenure in office.
Wearing sandals and no tie, Lugo headed the inauguration ceremony which was attended by nive regional head of states including Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Ecuador, Bolivia, Brazil, Venezuela and Honduras. The "president of Taiwan" was also present at the inauguration this morning setting a remarkable distancing policy toward Chinese efforts in the region.
During his inauguration speech, Lugo heraled the end of a exclusivist, corrupt and secretive county. However, povery alliviation, land reform, efficient bureaucratic work, oil and food seems to be the most urgent problems facing Lugo now.
