Updates: On 18 June 2008, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez met Lugo at Caracas this afternoon. Lugo is expected to meet with other members of the Venezuelan cabinet as well as religious local groups. 


Caracas, Venezuela, 17 June 2008. The newly elected President of Paraguay, Fernando Lugo, starts a two-day visit to Venezuela tonight. According to official sources, his visit is aimed at analysing bilateral relations and their improvement.  Lugo visited Bolivia last week during the celebration of El Chaco war anniversary. Then, he travelled to Ecuador to meet with President Rafael Correa. During his visit to Quito, Lugo stated that all Latin American countries were interested in obtaining peace in Colombia. In addition, Lugo stated his government will work towards sovereignty  and equality in Latin America. Fernando Lugo- an ex Catholic Bishop- is expected to improve relations with left leaning democracies of the region and join ALBA.
