Update: 08/25/08 The most recent reports are saying 90 people were on the plane and up to 68 died.
Update: The plane had reported a technical problem and was trying to return to the airport, one report says over 120 people were on board. Passengers included the national basketball youth team of Kyrgyzstan. (this figure varies between 83 - 123 from different sources). The Telegraph are reporting "almost 100 dead".
Kyrgyzstan's health ministry has announced 87 people were killed after a passenger plane with 123 onboard crashed in Bishkek. "According to our latest information, 87 perished and 12 were hospitalized in the trauma unit including two who are in very serious condition," health ministry spokeswoman Yelena Bayalinova told AFP.
A Russian news agency (RIA-Novosti) quotes a Kyrgyz civil aviation official as sayng 25 people survived.
Around 100 hundred passengers were on the plane bound for Iran, there is a report of casualties, rescue teams are on their way to the scene
As often happens reports are varying an official at the airport has described it as "an emergency landing"
The Interfax news agency cites an unidentified source as saying there are casualties and identifies the plane as a Boeing-737.
MOSCOW, Aug 24 (Reuters) - A passenger plane crashed at the airport of Kyrgyzstan's capital Bishkek with around 100 people on board, Russian news agencies reported on Sunday. RIA news agency, which quoted the press service of the U.S. airbase in Bishkek, said the plane crashed on take-off but gave no further details.
Kyrgyzstan , officially the Kyrgyz Republic, is a country in Central Asia. Landlocked and mountainous, it is bordered by Kazakhstan to the north, Uzbekistan to the west, Tajikistan to the southwest and China to the east.

Vinny, how far is the crash site from the Baikonur Cosmodrome? And how long before a passenger manifest will be available? I ask because Russian and American astronauts/cosmonauts and workers usually use civilian flights into and out of some areas.

Baikonur Cosmodrome is about 500-600 miles away in the south of Kazakhstan PEP, I have no idea yet when a passenger manifest will be available as news is very slow in coming out on this story.

What arirliner is it? Iran-Air? Iran-Air flies with old boeing's (bought in Shah's era) but are not able to get spare parts. Kyrgyz Air only had one plane a Douglas, but it ceased to exist in 2003, so yes it most likely is Iran-Air. Wonder why they don't mention that on the news.

Correction it is an Asaman Air plane not Iran-Air but also Aseman Air is an Iranian fleed facing the same problems with spareparts as Iran-Air only a bit worst for they are not allowed to fly on Europe because of safety concerns, Iran-Air is allowed (yet).

Update: The Vancouver Sun online is reporting that 68 of the 90 people on board were killed. There were 24 Kyrgyz, 52 Iranians, 1 Turkish national, 2 Canadians, 3 Kazakhs and 1 Chinese national on board. 7 crew members are among the survivors, but the list of the passengers killed has not been released.
The plane was owned by Itek Air, a private Kyrgyz company, that is on the European Union blacklist of airlines banned from flying in EU airspace.
