Pat Robertson On Haiti: Earthquake Punishment For Pact With Devil
Famous American televangelist Pat Robertson raised eyebrows when he said on today's episode of the 700 Club that the deadly Haitian earthquake that is believed to have killed thousands of people is God's vengeance for a "pact" Haitians swore to the Devil. Robertson said Haitians have been cursed because they made a "deal" with the Devil to free themselves from the French. He said even after the French were gone, the Island of Haiti has been cursed by "one thing after the other."
Robertson said, "the Island of Hispaniola is one island. It's cut down the middle. On one side is Haiti, on the other side is the Dominican republic. Dominican Republic is prosperous, healthy, full of resorts, etc.. Haiti is in desperate poverty. Same island." But, Haiti has to endure hardships due to the God's vengeance for deals with the Devil, according to Robertson.
Robertson's comments have stirred a lot of anger from Internet users who have lambasted Robertson on their blogs and Twitter feeds.
No comments or apology have been issued from the producers of the 700 Club yet.

As background, Robertson's comments about Haiti's "deal with the devil" refer to old folk tales about the country's founder, Toussaint L'Ouverture.

Lord Help Us All! I cringe everytime I see a comment like this from a well known "Christian". I'm an ordained minister and my husband is a pastor. Comments like these don't represent most Christians views (at least the ones I know/and I know quite a few). A Christians immediate response should be one of compassion, one of action in assisting however possible, and much much prayer. My Father knows that P. Roberton's comments don't represent my sentiments.

Pat Robertson is very hateful and ignorant. Unfortunately some people believe what he says. Jesus belived in helping those less fortunate not hating then. Maybe Robertson thinks to much about evil that he has become evil. He is not a Christine maybe he is a Bibbleist instead. Do not believe in his hate.

And what are you star555? Pat Robertson prayed for the Haitians to repent so they may heal from this... and you... you talk on the internet accusing Pat of evil things yet while you hide behind a mask. He is not hiding, he is public to all and works for others. Surely you must have done far more than starting charities for the less fortunate for you to accuse Pat Robertson of doing such wrong?

Pat Robinson needs Jesus!!!We all know he is crazy but just in case anyone wants to now where this is coming from see below. The quote is from the original article which can be found using the link below.www.blackandchristian.com/articles/academy/gelin-10-05.shtml" I would not be surprised if the satanic pact idea (followed by the divine curse message) was put together first by foreign missionaries and later on picked up by local leaders. On the other hand, it is equally possible that some Haitian church leaders developed the idea on their own using a theological framework borrowed from those same missionaries who subsequently propagated the message around the world. Either way, because of this message, Haiti has been portrayed as the country born out of Satan’s benevolence and goodwill toward mankind. Shouldn’t such a fantastic idea be tested for its historic validity and theological soundness? I invite you to take with me a closer and possibly different look at the available records."

To Dee Cee, It tears up the liberals with any kind of reference to God, even if it's saying God judges people according to their actions and deeds. Maybe Dee Cee needs Jesus, or if he thinks he has Jesus, maybe he needs to study his Bible and ask God to reveal the truth to him, because he doesn't seem to know the truth about God. Liberals want to rid society and the world of any evidence of God and Jesus. They can't stand it when you suggest that God may hold people accountable for their deeds and actions. Most liberals deep down don't really believe in God. They want a humanistic world where they set up the "values" people live by. Look around and look what a mess they have already made on the American society. They preach tolerance, diversity, and non-discrimination. But they can't tolerate God, Jesus, or Christians. They want diversity except where it pertains to Christians and Christianity. They discriminate daily against Christians and conservatives. The only way they know how to defend their ideas is to try to attack and belittle their opponents. They are just a bunch of shallow, arrogant, hypocritical individuals who look down their nose at someone who would believe that a creator had to create all the organization and pattern of earth, the seasons, animals, humans, etc. Yet they believe the stupid idea that it all happened from some explosion and that man came from a monkey---even though some of the monkeys decided to keep on being monkeys. They believe structured organization came from kaos! Christians believe structured organization came from intelligence. Dee Cee you need to keep quite until you have something more intelligent to say.

You know, "Truth," the problem with a few Christians like yourself lies in the fact that you presume to know the omniscient and inscrutable mind of God. I won't debate you on issues like the inerrancy of Scripture, but past pronouncements from the Bible do not offer ironclad explanations of events that happen in the present--and readings of Revelation offer no defense for your callous comments, because none of us can hope to know which world events truly DO or DO NOT correspond to fulfillments of prophecies for the future; only God knows that. You and other hateful souls should remember the virtue of humility before you presume to judge others around you, and the sin of pride before you presume to speak on behalf of the Divine. . .

You sound likes you are crazy. Liberals have nothing to do with the evil hatefulness of Pat Robertson. Pat is responsible for his own actions.
at 05:18 on January 15th, 2010
Sorry, Truth. You generalize your hate of people too much for my liking. To take a quote from your own text: [Truth] "you need to keep quiet until you have something more intelligent to say."
at 12:01 on January 15th, 2010
to "The Truth"What are you talking about. Seriously!

To: The truth......I could not have said it any better!!

It tears liberals up that religion can't be kept out of the government, that people have a problem with a practiced religion, yet Christianity should be left alone. There's very little religious freedom in this country, and that's the least of our problems. When viagra is openly promoted on tv and birth control and condoms are not readily available for people who really need them, there's a huge problem with the whole system. Liberals want equality. They have values too. It's the same with Conservatives... but have you watched Fox lately? There is nothing wrong with being deeply rooted in faith and the Promises God has made. I'm not saying there is no god, I'm saying god has nothing to with this. -A Liberal Baptist, t

When under trial, let no one say: “I am being tried by God.” For with evil things God cannot be tried nor does he himself try anyone. James 1:13-

Haiti is 80% Catholic and 16% Protestant. Pat Robinson needs to research before saying what he believes is true. The loving God he preaches about would not do that.
at 02:37 on January 14th, 2010
But the loving God you are both talking about let it happen, how is that different? We witness pain and suffering throughout the world every day - God allows it. In his omnipotence, God could have stopped this; but He, in His sovereignty, did not stop it. And it is certainly true that within Haiti there is a lot of spiritual darkness... more than most other places - that cannot be denied. They need the gospel of Jesus Christ, just like everyone else born into this world - and they need it now.
at 12:41 on January 14th, 2010
estellajane,I am curious how you omnipotently know that there is more spiritual darkness in Haiti than in other places. Perhaps you can tell me where there is the most spiritual goodness and I can go live there.
at 09:16 on January 18th, 2010
Yes. God help us all. The word says there will be earthquakes and rumors of earthquakes. We can attempt to analysis, blame , judge, etc. The bottom line, there is no place to run or hide-we need to get our own house (ourself) in order. Self assess.

We dont need you to force your religion on the people of <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 />Haiti, all we want is the respect and the love that all humanity deserve and want.
