It has been confirmed that the Gaffney, South Carolina serial killer suspect is the same man shot and killed by police during a botched North Carolina burglary.  The suspect has been identified as 41-year-old Patrick Tracy Burris.

Tests on the gun found on 41-year-old Patrick Burris match the weapon used in the killings that have haunted Gaffney, South Carolina, since June 27, said Reggie Lloyd, director of South Carolina's State Law Enforcement Division.

See original story (below) for details...

Gaffney, South Carolina police are in Gastonia, North Carolina looking into "similarities" between a burglar who was killed by North Carolina police July 6, 2009 and the South Carolina serial killer suspect.  The dead burglar matches the physical description of the South Carolina serial killer suspect and a champagne colored Ford Explorer like the one Gaffney officials are looking for is parked outside the North Carolina crime scene.

Manhunt on for SC Serial Killer

It is possible that the South Carolina serial killer moved on to North Carolina after a sketch and description were released.  North Carolina police arrived at a burglary call early in the morning of July 6, 2009 and found three people in a Dallas-Spencer Mountain Road home.  One of those people provided police with false information and was later discovered to have an outstanding warrant in another jurisdiction.

When North Carolina police identified the outstanding warrant the suspect drew his gun and started to fire.  Officer J.K. Shaw was shot by the suspect in the leg after which he returned fire.  Officer Shaw's bullet killed the suspect who is now being looked at as possibly being the South Carolina serial killer.

This is a developing story and updates will be added as they come available.

South Carolina officials are on the scene looking into similarities between the suspect description of a sketch of the man wanted in Gaffney and the one shot and killed in Gaston County.

According to police, officers responding to a burglary call around 3 a.m. Monday found three people at a home on Dallas-Spencer Mountain Road.

During the interview process after responding to the burglary call, officers determined two of the individuals they located at the scene lived at the residence and the third subject was an acquaintance. Officers began to check the individuals for identification, and one provided false information.

A second check on the suspect individual uncovered an outstanding warrant from Lincoln County. Officers attempted to serve the outstanding warrant when the suspect pulled his gun.

Officials say officers got into a confrontation with the suspect inside the home, leading to Officer J.K. Shaw getting shot by the suspect in the leg. Shaw returned fire, killing the suspect. The wounded officer was treated and released from a local hospital.

There was "evidence in regard to the man that was shot," said Capt. Joe Ramey of the Gaston County Police Department.

Ramey did not give specifics, and said he could not state for certain whether the suspect had a link to the serial killer case.

"We saw evidence they needed to know about," Ramey said.

Gaston County is about 33 miles northeast of Gaffney, South Carolina. Police say a serial killer in the Gaffney area has killed five people since late June.

Police in Cherokee County, which includes Gaffney, had a basic description of the killer and the car he may be driving.

Good story.

No shooting death is good but if he is the one wanted in South Careolina it does end that crime spree.

This should be a great relief to the folks in Gaffney, SC.  Gastonia is only about a 30 minute drive from Gaffney.

I live 4 minutes away from where the shooting was on Dallas-Spencer mt. rd. I am a teacher and stay at home during the day with my children and was shocked and scared to find out how close this killer was to me and my children this morning. I for one am glad this has ended! SW

Ballistics tests on a gun and bullets found with the man in Gastonia, North Carolina, match those used in a weeklong killing spree in and around Gaffney, said State Law Enforcement Deputy Director Neil Dolan.

"We have him. He's our serial killer," Dolan said Monday night.

Authorities did not release the man's name, but said he has had several encounters with law enforcement over the years.

Patrick Burris, 41, was shot to death by officers investigating a burglary complaint at a home in Gastonia, N.C., 30 miles from where the killing spree started June 27. Bullets in his gun matched those that killed residents in and around Gaffney over six days last week, said State Law Enforcement Division Chief Reggie Lloyd.

Investigators did not have an address for Burris. While evidence left no doubt he was the killer, they still had no idea why he did it.

"He was unpredictable. He was scary. He was weird," said SLED Deputy Director Neil Dolan.

This is far from over, there are to many unanswered questions here that must be addressed while the story of these senseless murders is still fresh in the public's mind.  The first question should be one of "responsibility" for this creatures evil actions. Who are the people responsible for releasing this subhuman monster back into society???  What liberals college trained psychiatrist did the initial psychological screening on this homegrown terrorist??? Without a doubt, the blood of these five innocent victims will be forever on the hands of those responsible for his early release.  Obviously I'm talking about those bleeding heart liberal  judges and those court-appointed attorneys out there, who seem to be on the opposite side of the $LAW$. Yes, taking the killers side more often while at the same time crucifying our gallant men and women in uniform (ordained by Almighty God himself to administer, "real  Justice") who make up the only line of defense against monsters like these  "law-enforcement and crime prevention".

Please save me that old argument! That nobody is to blame but, the "killer"  That escape clause is as worn-out as this corrupt "Money first" judicial system of so-called justice.

"Jubilation" I am so very happy  that this murdering subhuman monster was shot dead by the authorities other than being arrested and read his rights for pulling that trigger of hate on those five innocent people. Which reminds me of another horrific incident, the Washington beltway sniper fiasco where justice was not served, NO!!! these two subhumans are still alive while their many victims remain dead. I personally would rather see these monsters painfully exterminated other then making some rich ambulance chasing monster of a so-called attorney even richer.

That's my personal opinion........be there? Or nowhere......

It's anyone's guess as to what would take place even if a judicial system this bad was not in place. But the judicial systems in democratic countries are extremely and incomprehensively dumb. At times you feel common sense, i.e. Dirty Harry or Murphy's Laws do better justice to the society than eccentric Judges and Attorneys.

I'm not convinced that this guy did it! This is just to easy- so far all they can confirm is that this is the gun which the shots were fired from. What if the gun was sold or given to him? Hopefully the piece together everything so we have conclusive evidence.

I am very displeased with our judicial system. When will they realize that most of these criminals cannot be rehabilitated? How many people have to die before they get it into their “brilliant” minds that it just can’t happen? Our country has a behavioral science unit (profiling) for a reason! This is a disgrace to all the work that John Douglass and the others have done to try to make the judicial system better! Larceny, forgery and breaking and entering; and then they just let him walk back on the street. He didn’t kill anyone (then) but with that rap sheet did you really think he was going to stop? Did it ever occur to you while he was sitting in that cell for Eight years that he was planning and fantasizing about his next crime he would commit? These men may not seem the cream of the crop in IQ, they may seem sick and demented, but they can fool a psychologist and psychiatrist into thinking they are rehabilitated.

A couple prime examples: John E. Robinson and Donald Gideon. John E. Robinson had an extensive rap sheet of forgery, scamming, etc. And after sitting in a cell and doing “good time” he fooled everyone into thinking he was rehabilitated. They let him out and what did he do? He went back to his old ways with even more intelligence from being “rehabilitated” and started brutally murdering women! Doesn’t make sense does it?

Donald Gideon was convicted of raping a college co-ed, served 8 years of “good time” and was let out onto the street. His own parole officer hid the fact from his employer. Yeah he check no to having any felonies on his application; however his parole officer knew where he was working and didn’t inform his employer! And he raped and killed a precious life… He didn’t just rape her… he got even sicker: he killed her.

So in my eyes this judicial system we have is completely failing us. They have the tools to keep these criminals off the streets and are wasting our tax money trying to rehabilitate these criminals; however what they are really doing is making them smarter and better crime committing machines. I don’t want my tax money to go to making a criminal smarter, just to have him released to kill someone.  How many precious lives is it going to take? When are you going to see the criminal for what he/she is and the victims for what they are?

North Carolina must do something about there liberal parole system and keep their criminals out of South Carolina.  My sweet Abby is gone and for what reason?  Their parole office was backed up...I guess that changes anything.
