Paulson Pleaded for McCain to Save Bailout

Here was Schieffer speaking with the Early Show's Maggie Rodriguez at 7:05 AM EDT today:

BOB SCHIEFFER: I am told, Maggie, that the way McCain got involved in this in the first place, the Treasury Secretary was briefing Republicans in the House yesterday, the Republican conference, asked how many were ready to support the bailout plan. Only four of them held up their hands.

Paulson then called, according to my sources, Senator Lindsey Graham, who is very close to John McCain, and told him: you've got to get the people in the McCain campaign, you've got to convince John McCain to give these Republicans some political cover. If you don't do that, this whole bailout plan is going to fail.

So that's how, McCain, apparently, became involved.

So, it was the Republicans being unpatriotic. And, poor Paulson needed Flip Flop McCain to come convince conservative senators this was all in their and he country's best interest.  That's almost as funny as the Letterman stuff.  I want some of the stuff Senator Lindsey Graham is taking.  Hell, McCain can't convince most the conservative Republican senators that he's a conservative, much less that he knows anything about economics.

It is to laugh.

It's unpatriotic to be unwilling to hand over $700 million to the very guys who caused this problem with no oversight, no rules, just hand it over NOW! You truly amaze me, dunk.

Renny,

Then, Paulson wanted McCain there to convince the Republicans to be unpatriotic.

I doubt very seriously if you are one of the Keating 5. doubt if you were ever a senator or representative. But maybe you were involved in that Lincoln bank scandal. Tell us all about it, dunkelburg. and how could you possibly help anyone more than confuse issues?

Damn, René! I am caught out!

I was pretty clear.  Paulson, who is proposing the power grab and $700 billion blank check, was having trouble selling it to Republicans, so goes the story, who felt approving such a program was unpatriotic.

His solution to bring along the Republicans and get them in line with his plan, which was referred to as "unpatriotic", was to call on John McCain to come and bring the recalcitant Republican senators around to his, Paulson's, way of thinking.

Ergo, IF Graham is telling the truth, Paulson called McCain to Washington to push Paulson's "unpatriotic" plan down the throats of Republicans who see it their patriotic duty to oppose it.

Well, if that was Paulson's plan, it's not working. Not even on his knees could Paulson make it go. That truly must have been a sight to be seen.

Anyone ever heard of throwing good money after bad.  I am hearing Dems say that we have to bail out or it will effect Main street.

I thought Dems didn't believe in trickle down economics.  You mean that if we don't help these companies that people on Main street will lose jobs???  My Gosh, have the Dems become Ronald Reagan?

Thats why the GOP gives tax cuts to business... so the employ people.. what a concept.

I fail to understand why these criminals and their criminal enterprises are going to get $700 billion free and clear, or any at all. Are all these Senators and Representatives so stupid to even consider this? Paulson is just another mobster in my book.
