Hyderabad: Peace was restored in the Osmania University, a scene of pitched battles between the police and students who want Telangana state carved out of Andhra Pradesh, an Indian state. Police had been using tear gas and shooting rubber pellets to control the students who were throwing stones at them.

On Sunday, Andhra Pradesh Home Minister Mrs. Sabita Indra Reddy has called a meeting of people’s representatives from the Telangana region and top police officers. Dismissing the contention of the opposition leaders that police was posted in the campus, the DGP Mr. Aravinda Rao has said that police force was stationed only outside the university campus and not inside. He has also denied reports that movement of students was restricted. He said police were only stopping students moving in groups, because of security reasons.

The University Vice Chancellor has also held a peace meeting with student leaders in the university campus, where the students had agreed to continue their agitation in a peaceful and non violent manner. Following these meetings, peace was restored on Sunday.
