Pedophilia in Cambodia: penality is not harsh enough

The Cambodian national newspaper, the Phnom Penh Post, reported today that the 62 years old Swedish pedophile was found guilty on the charges of sexually molesting multiple boys for the past two years. He, based on the report, was sentenced 6 and a half years in jail and fined  US 963 dollars.  The victims included two boys who were trying to sell souvenirs on the beach and a 9 year old boy who the pedophile claimed to be an adopted son at the time of arrest. However, though the improvement on Cambodia's pedophile crackdown is laudable, a pedophile receiving 6 and a half year long jail term and $963 dollars for fine at the expense of molesting three boys for the past two years is a slap on a wrist.

A pedophile spends 6 &1/2 years and is fined less than 1000 dollars. This, however, is a slap on a wrist given the sexual abuse damages children for life. Granted Cambodia has demonstrated a tremendous improvement in its prosecution of pedophile and sex trafficking. However, further development in its penal code and its due diligence to deter such crime are very much in need of place in terms of executing justice for these child victims. The penalty is not harsh enough for sure.

Agreed.  The penalty should be much longer but at least this bastard will serve his time rotting in the harsh conditions of a Cambodian prison and not some Club Fed institution in Canada or the US.

Maybe they could release him to the general prison population.  There is honour among thieves.

Put some girl gorilla scent on his ass and leave him in the gorilla cage!

The unfortunate side of child sexual abuse in many underdeveloped countries is that it is a big factor that drives a hugely undesirable element of the tourist trade. The penalties need to be harsh and uncompromising if it is to be stamped out.
