Pet dogs abandoned as recession bites
If you make a christmas present a dog for example, think twice. Many are given up as a result of home or credit crisis. so you could get one of this to give them a new home
"Moving as a result of the credit crunch is the number one factor for giving up a dog," explains Moore. "People also ring up to say they can't afford to look after their dog anymore, because they've been made redundant."
On top of overcrowding, animal rescue charities face another problem; they rely on charity donations and are likely to suffer in those terms.
"The expected increase in unemployment and decrease of disposable income is going to affect the donations," says Moore.
Another concern for dog charities is that animals are given as Christmas presents. Unfortunately some of these dogs turn up at the re-homing center in the New Year as unwanted gifts.

Poor little dogs, recession will affect them too but if you are a real animal lover you will make an extra effort to keep your pet. As a family we had our own "times of recession" and we managed to keep our dear female chow-chow "Fluffy" she shared our food as simple as it could be, and she stayed pretty healthy up to the age of 14, when somebody shot her. We grieved her loss deeply.

patgarcia.....Poor little dogs, recession will affect them too.chow-chow "Fluffy" she shared our food as simple as it could be.. So Fluffy made it, good news. To read behind the lines of this article, many lost their homes, don't know where to go. In California even horses just liberated, owner lost home

I don't think I could ever give up my cat, regardless of what happened - I would just adapt personally.

There is no reason to give up your pet unless you die and even then you can make plans for someone else in your family or a friend to take them. Unless of course you don't care for the animal you have and are only using the pet to "keep up with the Jonses."

Dogs are not good Christmas presents. Folks should take good care into the commitment of having a dog or cat. It is a life commitment. Thanks for the story. I have two rescue dogs. Both have helped me get through a lot of things. Especially when I medically retired. The dogs were right there on the bed making sure I was ok. They are a blessing...

hbagwan....I don't think I could ever give up my cat, regardless of what happened; The cats can organize themselves, if necessary, they stay in the old area with the house. But the dogs don't know what to do ?

Calvin, who was up for adoption at Defenders of Animal Rights in Phoenix, Maryland (http://www.adopt-a-pet.org/). I believe he has been adopted, but there are many other dogs waiting for homes at this no-kill shelter.

Animal cruelty is an issue i'v always been concerned about over other things.
A couple of years ago I worked with an animal shelter as a volunteer, and some of the animals there...just made me want to cry!!
On a recent visit to the same shelter, most of the dogs where staffordshire bull terriers. One was recently found one morning, tied to the gate of the shelter, anonomously left.
I don't know how anybody could be so cruel as to do that to an animal.
...a dog is for life, not just for christmas!!
