The international animal rights group PETA should be labelled as a Terrorist organization, after a PETA activist, Emily McCoy, hit  Newfoundland politician, Gail Shea, in the face with a pie to protest the seal hunt, a Liberal MP says

Gail Shea's colleague Gerry Byrne, the Liberal MP says, PETA may have ( People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) crossed the line and committed terrorism by intimidating elected officials. Byrne  is asking Ottawa to review PETA's activities in Canada to see if the terrorism label will stick

"It would be illegal to make funds, to contribute funds, to what is termed a terrorist organization," Byrne said.

"It would also severely restrict the movements between borders, between Canada and the U.S., of PETA members, especially their executive, and it would cause a matter of surveillance to occur of PETA members who would be labelled as members of a terrorist organization." (source: CBC)

Emily McCoy, 37, was arrested and charged with assault for the pie throwing incident. Earlier in the year for trespassing in Charlottetown in another Fisheries-PETA related incident

Gail Shea told the CBC that  the pie throwing has not lessened her resolve.

"I can tell you that this incident actually strengthens my resolve to support the seal hunt," she said. "If this is what it takes to stand up for Canadian sealing families and this industry I'm certainly very proud to do it."

I don't support the pie throwing, but I'm so tired of the culture of killing innocent animals for profit and fashion being the norm. It doesn't seem to matter how many people speak up around the world, including thousands of Canadians, our government is determined to continue to allow a small amount of people to profit from the atrocities of the seal hunt.  I often feel so discouraged and frustrated, not to mentioned embarrassed that we have the largest slaughter of marine animals anywhere in the world in our country. It's time to stop!

I know that PETA sees this as a set back but I have to tell you it is about time somebody stood up to the blood and fur thirsty sealing industry. The Canadian seal slaughter is a huge blemish on the Canadian Government and the people that support. There is no place in the this day and age for the killing of baby seals. Maybe someone should hit Gail Shea with a hacka pik. She would have a sense of what the seals go through!

What concerns me is that this individual already caused issues at an event early in 2009 in Canada so how is it she wasn't turned away at the border???

If Peta wants to make an impact, they should look in thier own back yard and attempt stopping all those American trophy hunters and sport fishermen motivated by testosterone and recreational pursuits. They won't though because its an Americans "right" to kill animals for pleasure and pleasure hunting/fishing spawns a billion dollar industry. It's would be "unpatriotic" so it becomes easier to target a lawful industry in another country. And if you want to talk about Slaughter of marine animals, The fishing industry far surpasses the seal hunt in numbers and it even has become prime time entertainment for the Americans with shows like "deadliest Catch" were the plot is " If we don't have full crab pots, we have hardship and suffer so painfully". PETA monopolizes on the fact that seals are cute, and uses that for its own marketing and for financial gain, and they know if they go after an American industry they will lose support and in turn money.

Um, PETA does PLENTY to protest hunting and overfishing in America. You've created a false dichotomy here by stating that they either have to protest in America or abroad. They can, and do, protest all over. I think you're confusing PETA members with the United States population at large. PETA attacks American industries all the time, and there's no reason to think that doing so would affect their funding. Also, you meant to say that "PETA 'capitalizes' on the fact that seals are cute . . " You'll have a hard time convincing anyone of the validity of your opinion if you write those kinds of malapropisms.

Five minutes of quick searching after I read this story produced an interesting document entitled "APHIS Facility Security Profle". It was authored by the USDA in December 2009 and asks US laboratories (on page 4),"What terrorist activities have occurred in or around your building/facility in the past 5 years (documented cases)?"PETA is the third choice of six available under the "domestic special interest terrorists" section. The document is publicly available.

Boo hoo another protest for the bloody seals and yet I've yet to ever hear anything about how MILLIONS of chickens are slaughtered ruthlessly every year by any of these organizations .....for an organization that prides itself on the quality of life and all that jazz why dont they have any SAVE THE CHICKENS campaigns ? oh that's right they aren't as cute and fluffy as Seals.....

Big friggin deal, a pie,    how much blood poured out of this bitch.  I dont even belong to Peta, but this is insane!!!!!!   Terrorism !!!!   Tad overreacting are we?    Besides this "terrorism" nonsense (which it definitely is)NONSENSE > the horrific, torture and pain these innocent baby seals have to endure with their mothers watching helplessly needs to end!!  Please BOYCOTT all Canadian seafood and Canadian maple syrup.  Not going there would help too.  The seal "hunt"  is one of the cruelest, most barbaric practices allowed by any government.  BOYCOTT .
