Petraeus named to Central Command; will face Afghanistan, Iran threats
David Petreus, who has become one of the most influential generals in American history through his close connection to George W. Bush, has gotten a promotion. Petreus is said to have a direct line to the white house, and has sway over the presidency to a level rivaled by few others who have held his position. The promotion puts him at the forefront of a potential future war with Iran.
President Bush's favorite general has been handed the daunting task of winning the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq as well as confronting the threat from Iran, the Pentagon announced Wednesday.
Army Gen. David Petraeus, currently the Iraq commander, has been nominated to head the U.S. Central Command, which has military responsibility for all three arenas.
Petraeus' move upstairs is part of a major reshuffle in the top ranks that will put in place strong advocates of President Bush's stay-the-course policy in Iraq and hard line on Iran, jobs that will be inherited by the next President.
With a green light from the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said, "I have recommended and the President has accepted and will nominate Gen. David Petraeus as the new commander of the Central Command."
