In a time when crisis lurks the country it is quite not good news when you here one Government official held in a foreign country for carrying a very big amount of cash.

If you are traveling abroad, one thing you would know is that you cannot carry a very large amount of money. In the Philippines you are only allowed to carry 10,000 pesos when you travel abroad.

But the interesting thing is how was this general able to travel outside the Philippines carrying this amount?

MANILA, Philippines -- (UPDATE 2) After initial disagreements, the Philippine National Police (PNP) and Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) finally agreed Tuesday afternoon that a top-level police delegation to Russia, one of whose members was held by customs officials there, had been given P6.93 million for expenses.

PNP Director General Jesus Verzosa and police spokesman Chief Superintendent Nicano Bartolome also said that the expenses of the officials’ wives who went on the Russia trip were “personal.”

Earlier in the day, Bartolome said Dela Paz had a P7.5-million (approximately 120,000 euros) “contingency fund” with him when he was stopped by Russian customs officials at the Moscow airport, while Interior Secretary Ronaldo Puno said the amount was P6.93 million (approximately 105,000 euros).

francisrivera, I like this story. It's good stuff. Why was he carrying so much money? Was it really for his wife's expenses?

I don't think so... As far as the Arroyo administrations concerned, I believe this alibi is not true, a very lame excuse.

The President is a known liar ever since.

That's how it smells from here Sanjay. She's going beyond 2010 (the end of her term). That's why she is pushing for cha-cha (charter change), to keep her glued on her throne.

And thank you for the GS! I really appreciate it!

francisrivera, I like this story. I have carried more than 10,000 peso (83 pound sterling) out of the country and never knew that this was the law. Next time I will be very careful, but one point no one search me or asked.

the amount is a very small allowance to spend abroad, but what about travelers checks, is the limit the same? Not that it really worries me as I can use a ATM at the other end of the flight.

Thanks for the info...
