This incident is not in the area under military law and said not to be connected to the killing of 57 people. Its a gang of known kidnappers.

An armed group has seized dozens of hostages from a school in the southern Philippines, officials have said.

The Philippine military spokesman told the BBC all 75 hostages had been released but later reports indicated at least 55 people were still being held.

The kidnappers belong to a gang of former government-armed militia on the island of Mindanao, police say.

A BBC correspondent says there is no sign of a link to the killing of 57 people on the island last month.

The BBC's Rachel Harvey in Bangkok says the southern island of Mindanao is awash in weapons as the government has armed a number of civilian groups to help the military and police fight a number of insurgencies.

The kidnap group is stated to be ex-military

The victims and the suspects headed northeast of the same sitio where government forces are now pursuing them.

Chief Superintendent Lino Calingasan, chief of the Police Regional Office-Caraga, said the 15 suspects were led by one Juan Ondo Perez.

Calingasan said they have organized a Crisis Management Committee headed by Governor Tina Plaza to negotiate the freedom of the hostages.

As of Thursday afternoon, Calingasan said 17 children and an elderly were already released through the negotiations.

He said there were actually 75 hostages. With the release of the 18 hostages, Calingasan said 57 hostages are still in the hands of the group.

(CNN) -- Kidnappers released nine more hostages Friday in the southern Philippines, but held on to 45 others in a tense standoff, a CNN affiliate reported.

A total of 75 hostages -- including children -- were abducted Thursday afternoon in Prosperidad, the capital of Agusan del Sur province.

The kidnappers released the nine hostages Friday afternoon, several hours after freeing three females, CNN affiliate ABS-CBN reported.

All together, kidnappers had released 30 hostages. Authorities were negotiating the release of the others.

Military and police security forces had surrounded the building where the hostages were being held, ready to rescue them if negotiations bogged down, the state-run Philippine News Agency said.
