Well it was stated that the martial law was only going to last for short period it seems to me the purpose was fully achieved nothing untoward's has happened whilst martial law was imposed. It allowed a shake up and removal of corrupt police and military personnel. Restricted movement of gun men and allowed arms catchments and personal weapons to be removed and that can not be a bad thing.

Also really some good news about the hostage takers in a separate part of the island have surrendered and the hostages have been released.

hilippines President Gloria Arroyo has lifted martial law in a southern province where 57 people were killed in political violence, aides have said.

Martial law was imposed in Maguindanao a week ago to quell what the government said was a rebellion by the Ampatuan clan, blamed by police for the deaths.

Members of a rival clan and journalists were among those killed on 23 November.

Separately, gunmen holding dozens of people hostage in the southern Philippines have agreed to free them.

A government spokesman said the gunmen had decided to surrender after the state said it would consider some of their demands, and would release the hostages at 0700 on Sunday (2300 GMT on Saturday)

MANILA (Updated 10:45 p.m.) -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo lifted martial law in Maguindanao at 9 p.m., Saturday, eight days after she declared it allowing police and soldiers to arrest suspects without court warrants.

Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said the Cabinet's security group recommended the withdrawal of Proclamation 1959 and the President approved it during a National Security Council meeting early Saturday.
