The Philippines was rocked by a 6.2 magnitude earthquake late Christmas morning.  The earthquake hit just outside the city of General Santos.  No casualties have yet been reported.

An earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale shook parts of southern Philippines on Thursday.

The quake, which struck at 11:20 am local time, triggered panic among residents but no reports of casualties have been received.

The epicentre of the quake lies at about 50km from the city of General Santos on the large southern island of Mindanao, according to the US Geological Survey.

The Philippines is prone to earthquakes, the deadliest of which left more that 1,500 people dead in Luzon.

I wish we knew the intensity since every Earth quake is measured in magnitude and intensity. a 6.0 magnitude with 1 as intensity is less damaging then a 5.0 magnitude with 4 as intensity.

I live in Michigan, and have only felt very minor earthquakes, but the last one we had felt like a train going through my front yard...it was very strange, and kind of scary, because there is no where to run.

well I am still alive and I live here, could this be a false report of santa landing too heavy on Gloria,s palace? Being serious it seems to be in a non populated area, however whats next, when you live in the volcanic area one knows that your spinning a coin and hope its always coming up heads. I have slept through three earth quakes so far and this one did not rock my christmas.

Thanks very much! Tina Kells, for the news...

MANILA, Philippines - A strong offshore earthquake has rattled the southern Philippines causing  fear among the people, but no damage or injuries have been reported.

Renato Solidum, director of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHILVOCS), says the magnitude 6.1 tremor struck at 11:20 a.m. (0320 GMT) Thursday.

Solidum says it was centered at sea about 53 miles (85 kilometers) southeast of Gen. Santos at a depth of 115 miles (184 kilometers), too deep to generate a 'tsunami' or cause damage.

It was felt strongest in General Santos city, about 640 miles (1,030 kilometers) southeast of Manila.

General Santos City 'Gensan', home of the 'Pambansang Kamao' Manny "Pacman' Paquiao.

The Philippine archipelago lies in the so-called 'Pacific Ring of Fire' where quakes are common. The Philippines is prone to earthquakes, the deadliest of which left more that 1,500 people dead in Luzon.

More rocking, rolling and shaking by the earth. Geophysical researchers in your area should be encouraged to contact Quakefinder and get some sensors installed. I know they are looking for some global research partners to try and confirm their findings from the Alum Rock ‘07 earthquake. They believe electromagnetic fields provide a precursor to quakes and so far the data they have is supporting this.  Keep an eye on them and NASA ~~they are both onto something valid here!
