Just spent a wonderful afternoon today, with the Dalai Lama and Mathieu Ricard.
Ho and if you are wondering how to get his attention and this picture...
You just need to call him by his real name Tenzin Gyatso.
He seemed happy to hear his name in the middle of all "thanks your holiness here, holiness there etc) =)
The Dalai lama gave us a two hours conference / teaching, on many subjects. Talking from buddhism to globalisation. On our present and future as a civilisation and individual.
The connection and importance, between science and buddhism today.
The mutual gain, coming out from the collaboration between neuro, psycho, socio sciences etc . And what he calls "buddhism 's science". Referring to the study and experimentation of the mind through introspection, meditation, compassion and action.
And of course jokes !! He just LOVE joking and playing around =)
Two years ago, I got to follow one of his Massive Talk in Vancouver, in front of thousand of people.
This time it was a small conference, on invitation. And was close enough to look at him, to feel his warm and deep presence, curiosity, humor, humanity and kindness.
I think what surprised me the most the first time, and became stronger today. Is his clear and sharp understanding of today 's world on many levels.
You would expect a "religiously naive point of view, speech", on the world.
But it 's the opposit. He shows a clear and realistic understanding of it.
He talked about a lot of things today. But if I had to remember and transmit two of them, it will be:
First the world is changing rapidly. Becoming a global "entity"; from our techno- eco- scientifico etc evolution ; we should pay more attention and time to think and act, on the interdependence of ourself, to the world and others.
And second. Science is about looking for answers to get a better understanding of the world, the universe, ourself as biological entities, and the interconnection between all of that (and so much more =P )
But what about the mind, Our mind, YOUR BRAIN !?!
After all, aren ' t we all looking at the world through the mind, the brain....
So how about spending a little bit more time, energy and attention.
Looking at it, and trying to understand how thoughts are creating themself.
And since thoughts and feelings are what "shape" our "state of mind", from sadness to happiness. It' s easy to understand how important such a knowledge can be useful in our life and with outhers.
Now you just need to mix the two things...and let your mind go through all the possibilities, questions, problems, and hope it will bring to our civilisation...
“As human beings we all want to be happy and free from misery… we have learned that the key to happiness is inner peace. The greatest obstacles to inner peace are disturbing emotions such as anger, attachment, fear and suspicion, while love and compassion and a sense of universal responsibility are the sources of peace and happiness.”
The Dalai Lama
