Photos: Nigerian plane crashes, 153 feared dead
Around 153 people have been killed after a Nigerian plane crashed into a residential area in Lagos after takeoff on June 3, 2012.
Apart from the 153 passengers on the plane, the residents of the crash may add to the number of persons killed or injured in the crash.
The aircraft carrying 153 passengers had taken off from Lagos but was attempting to return to the airport after the pilot observed a glitch in the engine.
The Hindu reported, "President Goodluck Jonathan later declared three days of national mourning in Africa’s most populous nation.
"The aircraft appeared to have landed on its belly into the dense neighbourhood that sits along the typical approach path taken by aircraft heading into Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport.
"The plane tore through roofs, sheared a mango tree and rammed into a woodworking studio, a printing press and at least two large apartment buildings in the neighbourhood before stopping.
