A small plane crashed Saturday, July 25, near Mount Carmel, Illinois, at the intersection of Highway 15 and County Road 850. The plane was destroyed and the pilot died on impact, the only person onboard.

The plane is purportedly registered to James M. Bowers of Mount Juliet in Tennesse, but according to Tony Molinary, spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration, this does not necessarily mean that Bowers was the pilot.

The US National Transportation Safety Board is currently investigating what caused the crash.

"We don't know where it came from or where it was going," Tony Molinaro, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration said.
