Pinki Pramanik Was Arrested For Rape: Is the Indian Runner a Man or a Woman?

Indian athletics are in a state of shock after the arrest of Pinki Pramanik, a champion female sprinter who has been accused of rape.

According to reports, a woman has accused Pinki Pramanik of being a man and sexually assaulting her. The man claimed that she and Pramanik were in a long-term relationship and that they had lived together.

If convicted, Pramanik could face life in jail.

Police received a court order for a medical test to prove Pramanik's gender.

Pramanik has noted that she has undergone several gender tests in competition.

A Times of India story, however, suggests she may have once dodged a gender test at the 2006 Asian Game where she was part of the gold-medal winning relay team.

Pramanik's story brings to mind that of Caster Semenya, a successful South African track star who many thought may not have been female.
