Well; we have all heard of the Pirates hijacking ships off the Somalia Coastline in Africa. And we know that hijackings have occured before. Does the Italian cruise ship Achille Lauro ring a bell? On Oct 7, 1985 the Achille Lauro was hijacked by heavily armed men from the Palestine Liberation Front. http://www.history.com/this-day-in-history.do?action=VideoArticle&id=7046...

In the end the hijackers were arrested and sent to Prison. Of course they used the Military to accomplish this.

We just had http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090414/ap_on_re_af/piracy  Navy SEAL snipers rescue American ship captain Richard Phillips on Sunday. I heard it was like shooting fish in a barrel. And again we know this was a military operation.

These military actions have not stopped the pirates, or the hijacking of ships...In fact the above link tells of 4 more hijackings and over 300 more hostages.

Now I know how everyone's first reaction is hail to the US military and that it is the answer to our problems. But we are seeing that although Captain Phillips is a happy guy at the moment...there are more people that are hostages.. I hardly see how military intervention is a prescription to societal troubles.

Do we remember the time George H. Bush sent US troops to Somalia?

On December 4, 1992, the President's address to the nation officially announced Operation Restore Hope, President Bush stressed both the humanitarian purpose and the limited nature of the U.S. military intervention in Somalia: http://www.cato.org/pubs/fpbriefs/fpb-020.html....

This was the very first time that a President of the United States committed troops for humanitarian efforts. President Bush was criticized for going into a place that had no significant bearing on US interests.

In today's time with President Obama at the helm..many believe that Piracy is becoming too much of a problem and therefore affects US interests. Some may advocate another armed reentry into Somalia.

I think the problem is not Piracy, but a total collapse of the State of Somalia and its government. Who's fault is it, when the Western Rich countries do not engage Somalia in anything? I believe the Piracy is a result from the failed administrations from not only the USA but all countries in the world, who will not find it important to have people work toward unifying Somalia into a government. Whateever that may take...it seems we have the communications to do it.

It does not matter if Somalia has warlords, or groups who disagree....the point is to have them agree to disagree, but agree that they have a shared say in the power toward restoring and reforming Somalia government.

There are no Cargo Ships ever headed to Somalia. Why do they hijack? Because they need stuff. And since the rest of the world ignores them, they have to take matters into their own hands...even if it is against the law.

I would say we should have Cargo ships headed to Somalia...and hopefully with agreements from Somalia Security men.....we call warlords...they can agree to setting up their own distribution networks.

We need to solve the issue about Somalia in getting aid, and a government formed...and that does not mean we need to use the military. That was G.H. Bush's mistake. That has always been our mistake. Give aid from the barrel of a gun? It does not go over well with the natives. They think we are there to take over their lives...

We need to educate them, and this means also educating ourselves...toward effectively communicating that the world wants to help....and we need to put the guns and piracy away. But our response is always with force.. And we create the image that they are bad....and we are good...and that the same dysfunction goes on and on. As you can see many more hijackings are occuring.

We need to treat people like people....stop calling them bad....and help with support. We need to educate them that their fellow people are also not bad....because they  have needs and wants too. Although President Bush had a good idea...he went about accomplishing it wrong. You do not use a military to bring relief.

We should have used airdrops of cargo into Somalia...with things that they can use..Also trying to communicate with them to help each other...by not killing each other..

Please stop the heroism BS.....and begin to focus on the real issue, and that is helping the people in Somalia...without the need for military intervention. Start sending Cargo to Somalia..so they are not stealing stuff...

We need to seek the release of other hostages and ships....so why not send ships to Somalia, with the guarantee that we as a world body will make a committment to keep sending stuff...and help them make a government that works for distribution of stuff...such as building materials...and training schools on how to use the Somalia Resources to benefit and stabilize them.

This is far better than risking their lives in hijacking a ship....

I can only hope.....so let's.

I'd like to add details of an interview I did today with a Somali rapper K'Naan. He has an interesting view of the ongoing piracy problem on the Somali coast...

“I think the sending of ships is reactionary, and I think it is a lot more expensive than looking at trying to fix the root causes, which is the only possibility that this will actually stop,” K'naan told RFI. “Because sending more ships is not going to stop piracy, it’s going to inflate it, and the conflict will get more tragic.”

Without stepping foot on Somalian soil I have no true idea of Somalia's problem only that of my research, of which I will use as a thumbprint of my analysis.

I do know that US is not liked much due to its past dabbling. The politics of this area is unstable and there is a lack of law and order the area is tribal and run by clans lead war lords. This area has seen many wars small and large even under administration of UK and Italy this area was never a haven for peace.

Giving aid has its problems these people are irrational and the gun rules. The problem is not world aid but the the way things are in this lawless society any aid would carry a tag of corruption and the aid would not reach those that needed the aid.

The pirates are a bunch of heavy armed thugs that make a living from piracy they don't care whom gets killed or maimed. The profits are Hugh and the guns and equipment can be easily obtained.

Unfortunately your plan could not work without full control of the various clans and that would mean a UN takeover and then a long occupation to train troops and Somalian security forces.

However I like your idea's I just see many reason for the ideas not working due to the situation in this lawless place. The lack of education plays a great role in why Somalia is like it is.

Thanks Bob for your comment... I know the gun rules, just like it rules in the US. It is one big clan, or club that controls the others....CIA, FBI, OTF, Secret Service, Navy, USAF, Marines, Army, Civil Police....you get my point?  America has always relied upon a military to enforce it's ways on society....and they call that law? I call it no better than the Piracy Somalia advocates.

We can take this to a whole new dimension such as GW Bush the head Pirate; hijacked an entire country Iraq.....to steal their oil. Past American Pirate Administrations have stolen the actual land from Native American Indians....have stolen an entire Island in Asia called Japan.

America always wanted something in like kind to what the British got when they took control of Hong Kong from China, and it appears the Japan quest has no time limits or strings attached, hence Britian returned Hong Kong not to long ago. And we know what type of piracy that was.....the Opium Trade.

Granted..I don't think these teenage Somali Pirates have these things in mind.....but I assure you... do you think any teenager has anything smart going on in their heads when they enlist into the armed services in the US? I don't. As far as I see it.....it is nothing more than poor pirates harrassing rich pirates.

Now if we could stop the labelling of them being bad, and the US being good....maybe some sort of communication efforts can come forth....instead of opting for guns.

The recent rescue of Captain Philips appears to be nothing more than US snipers shooting fish in a barrel.

Perhaps these kids are afraid and need the guns to stand up against the US godzilla..is their thinking....while trying to work their way out of the poverty they are in. They are doomed no matter how you look at it. The US will not help them...without threatening violence, so all they have is violence to give back.

They have never harmed hostages in the past....which tells us they are human, unlike the bunch of military nim-wit's who are reactionary glory hero seekers.

I agree that Somalia is in a state of disarray and near collapse. I am no expert as to why it is happening and who is responsible. However, pirating in that region has been going on since the "Barbary coast" exploits.

Taking a ship full of cargo and releasing the crew and goods for millions of dollars is not going to stop unless there is a will to stop it. This is a good business model and has worked well in the past.

There is no doubt that if Somalia was a viable and secure country then maybe this industry would end. However, in the past top government officials have directly benefited from this venture.

In the end, stealing is stealing is stealing. No amount of excuses is going to change that exploit. Somalia at this rate is going to have a serious new class of people posted in Forbes top 500 wealthiest thieves in the world.

Thanks Steve, for your comment.....

The issue is what people need to learn is that we has a people strive to live honest lives. It makes us feel good, that we are able to work to support ourselves. This does not mean work is to take things from other people, without them agreeing or giving it to us. That is stealing and is looked down upon. Why would people especially Somalia people feel right about life, in taking stuff they never earned? They need to learn this fundamental human law of self responsibility. Whether big rich countries can afford it or not, or they deserve some of their own medicine....is an absent judgement....because doing a wrong thing in life...never justifies it as being right or correct to do. I hope Somalia abandons the piracy activity, and comes to join the world community.  It can only be more beneficial than the piracy practice.

Why steal from passing ships, when you could build a thriving nation with more worth than all the loaded ships in the world combined? People would not be shooting at you, and more people would be your friend... Seems to me Somalia would want that.
