Pirates attack on Egyptian Bulk carrier failed, due to Deployment of German Combat Helicopter from the Karlsruhe.

The EU lead patrol along the horn of Africa has caused the Somali Pirates their first set back of taking an Egyptian Bulk carrier. The “wadi al-Arab, with a crew of 31 was passing the Gulf of Aden between Somalia and Yemen  when it was attacked by the Pirates.

Another Ship alerted the Kuala Lumpur-based Bureau wish then alerted the multy National Naval coalition force in that area.

The Karlsruhe deployed its combat Helicopter wish drove off the Pirates. As reported by Reuters and Aljazeera News.  Ironically the War Ships name “Karlsruhe” means “the Peace of Karl” Named after the German City  that was named after Karl III Wilhelm. Ruhe bein Peace. rest or peaceful. A peaceful War ship one could think going by the name.

This is one major success of the newly funded Multi National Naval Coalition to stop the Pirates in that area. The Pirates have attacked so far 110 ships and succefuly hijacked 42 of them, off wish most where released after paying a hefty ransoms that has accumulate to $30 Million so far. However 14 ships with over 240 crew are still being held captive by Somali Pirates today.

Britain, India, Iran, America, France and Germany have naval forces in the waters now with over 12 war ships so far and will soon be joined by more War Ships from China and Japan.

Hope no war breaking out, the chinese arriving with 800 men and 2 battle ships. Has this to do with our crippling economy. Pirates disappeared long ago when economy went up.

Ein Reich. Ein Volk, Ein Sieg

Warum sagen Sie das?

Sie sind keine Nazis. Es ist eine Republik, nicht das Reich.

It's about time someone starts to address the pirates, I'm surprised it has taken this long.  I must be missing something on how this relatively small band of misfits can take multi-million dollar vessels hostage.

Great story.

I hope more countries get involved in this.

The 21st century does not need pirates.

The Chinese are sending two destroyers, a supply ship and plan to start sending milk shipments to Somalia - China's most deadly weapon.

The UN gave permission to interdict pirates.  That was just a week ago or so.  Many countries are sending Naval units including aircraft.  A long-duration air drone would increase situational awareness.  While the pirates have collected $30 million so far, the Naval operations will cost that and much more.  The expense of patrolling shipping lanes needs to be shared by all countries even though it will far exceed the ransoms saved.  Piracy will not pay well.

Why was I banned from Nowpublic without so much as a warning?

people have been on a warning not to repeat those words since, errm, 1945?

returning to the subject of piracy, is it not a form of legitimated piracy that various 'nations' have gotten away for years with the dumping of toxic waste in the seas off Somalia destroying livelihoods of fisherfolk along the coast, some of whom have turned to other methods for subsistence?

What words are those?  I dont live in Germany dude.  Free speech is allowed in the U.S> and Canada.

It's an old German propaganda slogan.

not so much "an old German slogan" as most specifically nazi. also you choose to name yourself after the German word for tank (as used by the nazis). you're certainly running the risk of being misunderstood. perhaps you're just having a laugh, but others will find those words most offensive. its completely irrelevant where you actually live (there are nazis everywhere).

Hi,

actually with the name, you are completely wrong! The name "Karsruhe" stems from the german city of Karlsruhe, as modern german warships are named after places in germany.
But! This city is *not* connected to Charlemagne, but to the Margrave Karl III Wilhelm, Margrave of Baden-Durlach. The founding of this city 1715 and layout (as legend has it) is said to be inspired when this nobleman was dozing under a tree while on a hunt ("ruhe; ger."="rest; en"). Check the (german) wikipedia for details (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karlsruhe)

Yes and that city was named After the Karl and you are correct it was Karl III Ruhe is peace or peaceful or rest. The point was a satire here to a war ship have the word peace/rest/peaceful with in its name. Thank you for the additional information I will add it.

Much appreciated.

I am not sure what you mean with though in your brackets.

hi Paschen,

yw. fyi: the byline within the brackets is a joke about my nick ;)
you may check: (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Germanicus#Time_spent_in_Asia_and_eventual_death)

But, being a native speaker in german myself: "Ruhe" does actually translate as quietude, silence or rest. It may often be used in the context of peacefulness, but the meaning is not quite the same, so i was a bit irritated when reading your article at first, but that is not all that important ;)

(BUT: more important might be that hunting pirates is a police action, and the Bundesmarine (German Navy) ist, by german constitutional imperative, not allowed to do police jobs. This specific law was made in reaction to the well-known nazi-time misuse in that field.
The recent german government will have massive problems with this and some other actions that are direct violations of german constitutional law when this goes to german constitutional court!

To think what an outcry such an action would have provoked in the US!
The alternative, to send boats of the german border patrol (police force) had not even been considered (as was helping the Somalis to cope with the problem themselves, nor was punishing european trawler captains and fishing companies for poaching within Somali waters). Strange, Isn´t it? The idea springs to mind that the reason for all this pompousness might actually not be stopping piracy, but diverting the public from actual political problems. Involvement in the financial crisis, maybe? Who knows.

So. You may stay tuned for more to this story, actually.)

i wish u and all readers a
happy new year and all the best for 2009!

As you said your self "be used in the context of peacefulness" Being my point. Now I did write about the German Constitution here as well and that the Bundesmarine is not suppose to be doing such interventions. http://my.nowpublic.com/world/german-coup-d-etatBe well and happy New Year.So why don't you join and write a post about all this or are you already a member of NP?The German Government has taken the Constitution to Court wish you failed to mention here as well as the fact that this is linked with EU and NATO and runs a in a legal grey zone. Same for Japan, why Japan is sending War Ships as well now, even though the constitution in Japan in regards to the Armed Forces is similar to the German.
