Thanks everyone, it is reported again, that 43 are dead, this was it's second attempt at takeoff and with a full load of fuel, perhaps this is why the death count continues to rise.  Some in BBC are now saying at this time perhaps 150 are dead. best wait till the end of the day to get an accurate figure.

Barry Artiste, I like this story. It's good stuff.  Looks like some folks got a look inside the aircraft.  Looks like the body count will be much higher depending on the how full that plane was.  If I am right there is room for what 120 pass?  God Bless the families of those who lost loved ones

I've been reading the Spanish newspapers and the news are not good at all.

Only 28 passengers were alive and one of them died in the way to the hospital

Según su relato, tan sólo 28 de los pasajeros del avión pudieron salir con vida y se encuentran en estado crítico. "El resto, todos muertos", relató con amargura.

"Is a miracle there are survivors" said one of the witnesss.

"Es milagroso que haya habido supervivientes", relató un testigo presencial del accidente.

This is a comment about how many people were aboard and what kind of aircraft it was:

Scandianvian airline SAS (SAS.ST: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) said on Wednesday there were 166 passengers and six crew onboard a flight run by its Spanish unit Spanair that had crashed in Madrid.

"The aircraft, an MD-82, was en route from Madrid to Las Palmas when the accident occurred, at 14:23 hours local time. We can confirm that there were 166 passengers and six crew onboard," SAS said in a statement.

Still some conflicting reports about number of causalities:

The Spanish government said 45 people had been confirmed dead with another 19 seriously injured.

Other reports in Spanish media said only a handful of passengers escaped the crash.

An official with the Madrid emergency rescue service SAMUR said crews were removing bodies and injured people from the plane.

"It is catastrophe," he said.

Some observers said one of the left engines caught fire as the plane accelerated for take-off causing it to swing off track.

Airport fire services were at the scene of the crash in minutes.

Now they are reporting at least a 100 so reports are still really sketchy on what happened.
