Terri Potratz, thanks for getting this story out so quickly. It will now show up on the home page for four hours. If new developments justify it, I'll renew this flag for another cycle.

A plane has gone off the runway at YVR today, after Vancouver struggles to cope with another day of snow and troublesome winter weather.

UPDATE - January 6, 5:04 PM PST
Rebecca Catley, Communications Director for the Vancouver Airport Authority, clarifies that throughout the string of bad weather YVR was at no time 'closed':
"Vancouver International Airport remained open and operational throughout all the storms. There were periodic runway closures in order to clear snow so that planes can take off and land safely, but at no time was the airport closed."
UPDATE - 10:19 PM PST
A small private jet skidded off the runway at Vancouver International Airport on Sunday evening as it was trying to land. There was no fire and no one was injured. The plane sustained structural damage in the landing, which took place around 5:30 p.m.
Airport spokeswoman Rebecca Catley said the Cessna Citation jet, which had flown in from Mexico, carried five people.
The pilot apparently contacted the airport before landing to say there was a problem with the plane's landing gear.
The accident occurred on runway 12 at the South Terminal.
There was extensive damage to the front end of the Cessna, and Transport Canada is now investigating the incident.
YVR maintains that the plane crash did not interfere with airport operations. Weather is clearly a factor in the continual delays and flight cancellations at Vancouver International Airport, and quite likely in the crash of this small aircraft.
UPDATE - 10:09 PM PST
I've heard that no one has been hurt, and that some planes are still circling the airport waiting to land on the few runways that remain open.

Twitter users note that there are no flights leaving Vancouver's International Airport right now, but some may be landing. Many are being redirected to other cities. These new complications follow a week of weather woes for Vancouver:

My friend is traveling back to London tonight, or she should be anyway. Her plane has been delayed for at least four hours and airport officials are saying that is only an estimate at this point. She's in for a long night...

Oh I feel for her, and everyone else who is stuck!
I can only hope that when I'm off on a plane ride in February that the weather has calmed down, or that YVR has their act together by then...

Ha, maybe by then... let's hope so! :)

Yikes I'm set to fly to YVR on Saturday. I hope the delays will be cleared by then.

Records show this was not a Citation, it was a US registered Global Express.
