“Playing politics with Genocide of Tamils”

This week has witnessed the slaughter of over 500 Tamils by the Sri Lankan armed forces as ordered by President Mahinda Rajapakse. More than 300 Tamils were wiped out within a period of 24 hours. Tamil villages have been turned in to a killing field (Safety Zone declared by Sri Lankan government) with the most number of Tamils killed within a 24 hour period in the history of the country

The writing was on the wall and many warnings were issued on the impending disaster. Chief Minister M Karunanithi is struck with a back pain and in hospital. He had the time and opportunity to prevent this gruesome killing of Tamils. His vacillation in standing up to the noble ideals about Tamilians that he himself voiced with his unfailing eloquence has now led directly to the loss of Tamil lives in their hundreds.

The intervention of Central Government Minister as implored by CM Karunanithi was put off on the basis that he was not welcome in the eyes of President Rajapakse. Shiva Shankar Menon paid a belated visit to Colombo shrouded in mystery with not even a post-visit press conference.

One cannot be faulted for seeing Mukherjee’s visit as nothing but an attempt at damage limitation. The foul deed was allowed to be perpetrated and politicians are trying to deflect the blame. For Mukherjee and Karunanithi mass killing of Tamils is only a tool to protect their positions in power.

History will record that they failed to act, though well placed to do so, to save Tamil lives lost in hundreds within a week. Even now it is possible to remove some blot only if resolute action, not words, is insisted by both Mukherjee and Karunanithi
