PNG people continue to frequent traditional markets in RI borders areas

People living in Papua New Guinea (PNG)`s Wassenggela and Imonda districts on the border with Indonesia continue to go to traditional markets in Waris district in Indonesia.

Antara`s monitoring in Banda Village, Waris District, on Saturday showed that Papuan New Guineans flocked to tranditional markets in Banda village for shopping for their daily needs like cooking oil, rice, soap, matches and stationery supplies.

They pay for the purchases with PNG kinas or Indonesian rupiahs. In the two markets both currencies could be used by buyers and traders.

"We often go shopping in Waris, because the prices here are relatively low and the location of the market is also close to our village. Let alone, Papuan people still have familial links with those in PNG," said Steven May, a Papua New Guinean buyer.

According to him, PNG people who came here for shopping were no longer new faces. They were quite recognized by Papuan people, as they met each other in the market during the transactions.
