The 2008 DNC has barely begun and arrests have already been made regarding a potential "assassination plot" to kill presidential candidate Barack Obama. CBS4Denver has more on this story:
Law enforcement authorities have arrested two men and several law enforcement sources say the investigation is looking into whether the men intended to harm presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama.
According to multiple sources, Aurora police made a routine traffic stop Sunday morning at 2:38 a.m. and arrested 28-year-old Tharin Gartrell. Sources say he was driving a rented pickup truck. The Secret Service says two rifles were found in his truck along with methamphetamine. Another law enforcement source says he was told at least one of the rifles was a "sniper rifle."
A second source told CBS4 Investigator Brian Maass authorities told officers they are concerned they may have come upon a possible "assassination plot."

Jarrett Martineau, I like this story. It's good stuff. What I can tell you Jarrett was security was at it's highest ever. 6 lines to 1, then two metal detection units, then searches. I am not on site. I have been viewing the satellite feeds from the remotes and roving camera men. In addition to the fixed cameras from Fox, cbs, nbc, cnn, msnbc, and Abc. Aljeezera is there as well. Good pick-up I just thought the security was high because all of the folks under secret service protection in the venue. In Myrtle Beach the SS and SC Law Enforcement division was very protective and used a simlar tacktic of security less the 6 line wait.

For those of you who may not have watched the convention, Michele Obama is quite the public speaker herself and gave a remarkable and touching speech and put up a very good case for voting for Barack Obama.
The tribute to Ted Kennedy, done by JFK's daughter Caroline, and Ted's speech afterward were the two best highlights of the convention thus far.
I feel I can go to sleep tonight, even more assured that if Obama can be president and not get bumped off during his tenure, we WILL see the kind of positive change that America needs so desperately.

What drives someone to try and assassinate an American political figure?
at 21:05 on August 25th, 2008
BigT, What drives any assissination? National or personal interest. Governments do it (I believe it is called "regime change" in the US). That having been said, it is wrong in this case as he is not a real serious threat to anyone that I can think of. He may not make a great President but that didn't get George W. Bush or Jimmy Cater shot.

True EastVan, many people theorize assissination of political figures, and some nutjobs wearing aluminum foil hats, say, Hey that is exactly what I was thinking, and they go carry it out to make a name for themselves, By the way where is Rumour and subliminal Innuendo Hillary in all this, didn't she first allude to the fact that perhaps she should stay in the race because.............

Nobody shot Bush cuz, Cheney is VP.

Oh, I doubt this is the first plot. There's always haters and nut jobs of some sort out there looking to get attention, get their name known, make some sort of nutso "statement" or whatever, who gravitate toward political figures. Some days, all it would take is someone wearing a green tie on a Tuesday to activate some people.
I was on a lead management team when one vice president came to one NASA center. Despite the fact that this was a secured, closed environment, where everyone who would be at a certain event was already vetted and badged, the security was....incredible. Because of some of my prior work in a very classified, closed world, and some of my former training (including some specialized FBI as well as DOD stuff), I was tapped to work with the high-echelon security stuff. *Very* high echelon.
Most of the security was not seen by those attending the event other than the always-present agents, many of whom are supposed to be seen. The other stuff? Let's just say I was there several hours early that day--after weeks of work--and I walked down some things with our and theirs security teams, the SS, the FBI, all the alphabet. And I was there very very late cleaning up some security things.
The thing with Obama is that they have to have a lot more highly visible security than they do for any other candidate in the Western world. If they don't, people will start screaming that he's being left out there without security.
What people don't get is that what's seen isn't the most important part of a total security package. Never has been. It's a valuable part of security, but a small part, and what's seen is also part of the public statement: we're here and we're protecting.
Other than the visible stuff that's a public statement, the most effective security is silent and invisible. How do you know when security personnel are doing their jobs? Nothing bad happens that disturbs the public.
That's the bottom line. And how the "nothing bad" is handled is, as I said, handled the best when 95% of it is silent and invisible to most.

Jarrett Martineau, I like this story. It's good stuff. this is the second plot in as many months. Glad the Secret Service are watching out and keeping their eyes peeled.
Unfortunately, I did miss the convention - hope that I can catch it on one of the websites out there. (Ahh the fun of 8 hours ahead of the convention area!!)
