97 people were on the plane and there were no reported survivors. Travelling with the President were his wife and many other senior Polish government and financial officials including the Army chief of staff, General Franciszek Gagor, National Bank president Slawomir Skrzypek and Deputy Foreign Minister Andrzej Kremoer.
The Polish nation is in mourning. A shocked and sad Polish Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, broke down in tears when he was made aware of the tragedy.
Plans have already been announced by Polish government officials for the speaker of the lower house of parliament, Bronislaw Komorowski, to take over the role of President on an interim basis with a new election for President to organised as quickly as possible.
