Yesterday, Turkish police arrested five members of a group that had planned the assassination of the leader of Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), Devlet Bahceli, back in October.

Nine others are being questioned. This should be seen in the context of the current drive for war in the region.

The MHP is known to oppose a Turkish military intervention into Syria. The group, called the "Turkish Revenge Union Organization/Resistance Movement," claimed that Bahceli was hindering the nationalist movement, according to the {Hurriyet} daily. This was part of a broader operation aimed at creating tensions between nationalists and Kurds.

The assassination was to have taken place Oct. 5th, but was not carried out because of the high security around Bahceli at the time.

A priest was also to have been targeted, but the attack failed, because of the priest's absence on the day of the planned attack.

Other attacks were also planned against senior MHP party leaders, and of leaders of the Kurdish Peace and Democracy Party, in order to foment tension and violence between nationalists and Kurds.
