Political gain leaves Afghan women behind
Barry Artiste Op/Ed
Boy, it is pretty scary when the Taliban look to Canada for ideas, such as polygamy, religious freedoms, and Yes, a Liberal Province of Ontario were seriously considering Sharia Law in Canada. Certainly when Ethnic Votes can ensure either Political dominance or a few years of opulence for Politicians looking to make a living on the Taxpayers dime, it shows so called professed Liberal Politicians, whether in Afghanistan or Canada would sell their own daughters , mothers and aunts, sisters and grandmothers to the Taliban if it meant 4 more years in power.
Something to think about next election time, when politicians are grandstanding for that much needed ethnic or religious vote! So much for the time honoured belief we are all equal in the eyes of God, cause Politicians never have subscribed to that belief ever!
There is a small Quebec village called Herouxville, Quebec, led by a town councillor, Andre Drouin, who listened to his constituents on fears that Sharia law amongst other Multicultural and Diversity Mantras may change the Canadain Landscape forever, and stated their concerns to politicians and the media. The end result were Media and Grandstanding Politicians of the Liberal Set, slinging the arrows of racism to a community who expressed concerns, we are now realising are all to real today! Now you tell me who was wearing Rose coloured Glasses? Certainly not a small Quebec town who made World Headlines and Andre Drouin Who became a celebrity in countries around the world for expressing concerns about this town, his people, his province of Quebec, and more importantly his country Canada!! It is said that many believe no one person can make a world of difference, when in fact it can be a single person who can and does. Andre Drouin is the single Person, followed by a town of single persons who did.
Question: Where did the Taliban in Afghanistan get the idea they could do a deal with President Hamid Karzai to bring in Shariah law?
Choose the best answer from the following:
1. The Taliban was encouraged by the fact that in February, the Pakistani government let it legally administer Shariah law in the country's Swat Valley If you chose this answer, you're right. Note that the Taliban in Pakistan offered a 10-day ceasefire in good will and agreed to give up their weapons. Pictures smuggled out of the Swat area and aired on national TV show the Taliban terrorizing inhabitants with all kinds of weapons. In their leisure time, they're shown flogging women. They also burn girl's schools and insist that women stay home - unless, of course they have their husband's permission to go out.
2. The Afghani Taliban looked to Saudi Arabia and Nigeria, where Shariah law has been firmly entrenched for years, and said if they can do it, so can we.
If you chose this answer, you are right. After all, the West - aside from momentary outrage over high profile cases such as Mohamed Kohail, a 23-year-old Montrealer who may yet have his head lopped off - shows no inclination to invade Saudi Arabia. The Canadian government has yet to effectively intervene.
3. The Taliban read up on Canada where, for months in 2004-05, the province of Ontario debated whether or not it should allow Shariah law. We nearly made it, they said, when the idiotic proposition was finally rejected.
If you chose this answer, you are right. It is jaw dropping that a Canadian province could seriously entertain the possibility of a law that puts the rights of women somewhere below those of the family pet. "They don't like women," said an Afghani doctor, when I was helping with her English a few years ago. She explained in her halting yet eloquent English, that she was referring to all things Taliban and all things Shariah. She also told me about her hazardous journey over the mountains and into Pakistan to escape.

I can't understand how any religion can have separate laws, when it is against the Canadian law?

Ah but when politicans re involved for votes, laws do not seem to apply

this whole business makes me sick to my stomach. We have Canadians over there dying and getting maimed so that these corrupt people(you notice I use a neutral term) can continue to hold power.

Thanks Barbara, you are preaching to the choir, a very large one.

Mustapha Kemal Ataturk, founder of modern Turkey, once said " Politicians who need religions to govern are cowards ". Looks like he was right. And looks like there are plenty of cowards around. None in Canada of course.
What Karzai is doing in Afghanistan is disgusting. Our Canadian politicians are far from being clean. Does Sharia approves polygamy ? Do we have polygamists in Canada ? Do Canadian polygamists receive monthly allowances for their many children from our governments ? How can it be so ?
And I have many other examples that Sharia is slowly being introduced and implemented in Canada. Charter of Rights, multiculturalism and our immigration policies will destroy our country. The number of ghettos in place (258) is a strong sign that we are preparing for chaos and anarchy.
None of our politicians in Canada are cowards. Right?

But Barry, this was based on the wording of the Arbitration Act of 1991. The Liberals weren't in power in Ontario in 1991. It was reviewed and recommended by Marion Boyd, who isn't Liberal either. So ... what does it have to do with the Liberals?
at 18:42 on April 4th, 2009
OKay, granted Marion was not a Liberal, just a New Democratic Party Member (Far Left) now you tell me under Bob Rae, who was her boss and NDP premier in 1991, and now Bob Rae a Liberal MP, who was also running for the Federal Liberals last year, if there is really any difference? It is just semantics Blue, only semantics. The party wings may be different, but they were and are on the same bird of political prey.

Yes, the Rae days (he started in my riding BTW), but I doubt if it was Rae who wrote the Arbitration Act...
My point was that the writing of that document wasn't questioned until 13 years later, when some ethnic communities got a hold of it and wanted to use it to uphold Shariah Law in Canada. It was then nipped in the bud, by the Liberals, as it should have been all along.

Seems Karzai was persuaded to review this law and send it back to their parliament.

Interesting story. <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 />Saskatchewan may be the only province to face freedom of religious belief litigation. They are also the only ones that allow same time conjugal unions (married state). They allow Polygamy using section 51 of their Family Act.
It makes one wonder why they now want to allow “religious non-compliance” to existing Federal laws against discrimination.
Could it be that Polygamists currently under fire in Canada also want to claim this same right? Is this premier Brad Walls immigration strategy at its finest?
Soldiers are dying to defend Western ways of life that do not include Polygamy and now Canada allows it?
