Political positives

I have been doing a lot of writing against wrongful and erroneous action in politics. Here I am writing what I actually want to see done.

I want high-technology, high-intelligence, high-job-creation abundant clean energy solutions to be implemented around the world to tip the balance from disaster to sustainability. Whether governments, businesses, or both, do this, is of little consequence. What is of vital consequence is that this does get done.

I want sustainable scientific and technological solutions - biotechnology to clean out landfills; sending water or hydrogen from the oceans into the deserts to create new farmland to feed the world's population and forestry to absorb CO2; and credible international efforts to confront the evolution of harmful and drug-resistant pathogens.

I want credible and effective efforts to fight and curb corruption in courts, medicine, nursing homes and mental health.

I want public sector and private sector to be both respected and both behaving in manner worthy of being respected. They should also be able to work together on matters of national and international significance.

I want people across the world to be able to work on sustainability and high-technology projects. This collaboration will create firmer and more positive ties, increasing undestanding and respect for each other and reducing the need for war.

I want men and women around the world to develop better relationships, with each party understanding the other and treating the other in manner consistent with their vows of love.

I want credible and effective worldwide efforts to fight domestic violence and sexual abuse of children. No woman should have to put up with ongoing brutality, nor should children have to dread coming home to the parent.

I want American primary education to catch up with the best.

I want arts and sciences to be cultivated, valued, and respected all around the world.

I want knowledge of all times and societies to be known and applied where such can benefit people.

I want terraforming of Venus and Mars in our lifetime to take the burden off the Earth. Over the long run there should be distant space travel and terraforming of other solar systems.

Whatever you want is possible, but there are just two hindrances:the governments and the business, both are corrupt and corrupt each other.

There are many ways to be corrupt. I've seen groups that were neither government nor business - such as small towns, old boy networks and religious groups - act in an extremely corrupt manner. Governments and businesses all have potentials for corruption, that's why there are efforts both public and private to fight corruption in both.

I agree with you that there are many ways to be corrupt. But fountainheads of corruption are political class and business class, rest, including religious bodies, are corrupted by either of the one or both.

Multinational corporations, some more powerful than governments of small countries, bribe ministers, high level government functionaries to secure land at pittance, some concessions, buy back agreements to the total disadvantage of local population. As long we have capitalism,we'll have to live with corruption. It is not the absolute power which corrupts absolutely,it is capitalism-private or state.

I'm not sure if this is true. According to Transparency International, the world's least corrupt country is New Zealand, which has a mix of capitalism and public sector, and the world's most corrupt countries - Somalia, Afghanistan and Myanmar - are, in the first case, a warlord zone; in the second case, a country rebuilding from destruction; and, in the third case, a military dictatorship. Communist countries were quite corrupt as well. What you appear to be saying is that it is money that corrupts, but I've seen corruption that was not motivated by money. Some of the most corrupt things I've seen were done for family or community, which many people see as pure and good things but which in many cases author very corrupt and destructive actions.

To drive my point home,I begin with India.India had a mixed economic system till late eighties, but was a corrupt country.Enron set up a power plant in Maharshtra and CEO of Enron Robeca Park said in a press conference that we(Enron) paid US$20 million to educate Indian politicians. She testified before Senate Hearing Committee what she has said in a press conference in India.

I can cite innumerable examples of similar nature.Even most notorious financial institutions,IMF and WB encourage corrupt practices.Read "Globilazation and its discontent" by Joseph Stiglitz, former Sr.VP and Cheif Economist with the World Bank.

What level of corruption Russia witnessed after introduction of market economy was unimaginable during state capitalism.

The last one is not true. Corruption was much more visible in the open system, but in the Soviet system it was just as extensive. According to some economists, the black market - secret illegal exchange of goods - made up over 50% of Soviet economy. When the system collapsed, the people who were involved in black market, being the only people in the country who knew anything about business, created bandit capitalism. They kept robbing the country until there was not much left to rob and they started to realize that in order to be wealthy sustainably they had to actually create wealth.

The last one is as true as the first one.State capitalism can never be free from corruption, that is there. But transition to market economy from state capitalism wrought havoc for the Russians.Income disparities widened and society was divided into haves and haves-not,some replenished their coffers by all foul means, some had nothing to make both the ends meet.Women took to prostitution, men to street robbery.Embassies had had to issue advisories to their employees not to venture out of their homes after sunset.

"............(S)ome experts worried that if they didn't privatize quickly, creating a large group of people with a vested interest in capitalism, there would be a reversion to communism. But others worried that if they moved too quickly, the reforms would be a disaster-economic failures compounded by political corruption-opening up the way to a backlash, either from the extreme left or right. The former school was"shock therapy",the latter"gradualists".

".....Russia was a rich country. While three quarters of a century of communism may have left its populace devoid an understanding of market economics,it had left them with a high level of education.......After all,Russia was the first country to send a man into space",Joseph Stiglitz in'Globalization and its Discontents.

Shock therepy is mantra of IMF and WB.Whereever these two institutions go,corruption follows rapidly. In some cases corruption entered first to pave way for the entry of these two institutions,Russia is one such case.

We'll see what happens in Russia over time. The people I know there are for the most part doing OK, but there may be many others who aren't.

The problem with Russia's transition to capitalism is that it was managed by crooks. Crooks, as the black market, were the only people in Russia who knew anything about business, so when the system changed they got rich by doing what they knew how to do - steal and scam. For capitalism to actually work, they need to be producing rather than stealing, and that's the lesson they learned by late 90s. I have an article here called "Uplifting the Russian Humpty Dumpty" about that.

Most likely, Russia will end up with a mix of capitalism and socialism. There are people there for whom the first is suited, and there are people there for whom the second is suited. If they work out a system like French or German they will be OK.

Shock-therapy was chosen by Russia under pressure from both notorious financial institutions, the crooks were pulling strings from Washington D.C.Transition from mixed economy to market economy has thrown up social problems,India is one such country.Don't compare French or Germans with Russia or any other European country.IMF is always headed by an Europen, can not dictate terms to Europeans.French and Germans will give a damn to IMF,not patient hearing like thirld world crooks.

I agree that the situation in Russia could have been handled better.

By situation in India (since you apparently are in India), what social problems are you finding? What I've heard from other people from India is that different regions have different politics, and that some are seeing the market economy as working for their benefit and others aren't.
