Posse Comitatus Violation: Pentagon plans to station 20,000 troops in US for 'domestic security'
The Pentagon plans to station 20,000 troops in the US, as part of planning for their future "failure" to prevent nuclear, biological or chemical attacks on US cities. The mission of the allegedly still state-controlled National Guard is to defend the US from internal strife; the US military is specifically prohibited from taking part- in order to guard against tyranny.
I've linked to RawStory.com, as they hit the important points and link to the full version at the Washington Post. From the Post article;
"There are critics of the change, in the military and among civil liberties groups and libertarians who express concern that the new homeland emphasis threatens to strain the military and possibly undermine the Posse Comitatus Act, a 130-year-old federal law restricting the military's role in domestic law enforcement."
The US Department of Defense plans to deploy 20,000 troops nationwide by 2011 to help state and local officials respond to terror or nuclear attacks and emergencies, The Washington Post said Monday.
Considering the US government has given 3 different timelines for it's failure to intercept any planes on 9/11 (the Pentagon was hit nearly an HOUR after the first WTC tower was struck; after a "summer of threat" about an Al Qaeda plot involving hijacked planes being used to attack US cities- a scenario which, incidentally, the Pentaon was conducting war games for- on 9/11), and they haven't made a credible case against Bruce Ivins being the Anthrax killer (the Anthrax was highly-weaponized and from Fort Detrick; Ivins was a vaccine specialist), it seems the first thing to do would be to investigate the Bush Administration, Pentagon, CIA, FBI and Department of Justice- not give these people and agencies (who may be "incompetent"; or guilty of treason) any more power.

As long as Congress approves the troops, it's okay. There is a loophole in the Act.
And what happened in Mumbai could happen in the states and the troops at home are a good idea.
In Mumbai, the police were stretched too thin and they stopped the heightened security a week before the attacks.
The government said the police probably wouldn't have been affective anyway against the highly trained attackers.
The face of warfare has changed. The troops will be a welcome addition to homeland security.

SEC. 15. From and after the passage of this act it shall not be lawful to employ any part of the Army of the United States, as a posse comitatus, or otherwise, for the purpose of executing the laws, except in such cases and under such circumstances as such employment of said force may be expressly authorized by the Constitution or by act of Congress;

While a Mumbai-style attack certainly seems possible, we already have a national guard (stretched thin and many killed by deployment to Iraq, a war based on lies), and police across the nation are becoming increasingly militarized. We live in a "post 9/11 world", and we've never been a credible explanation for how the attacks were able to succeed, and no one has been held accountable- see my comments below the highlight above, and The Complete 9/11 Timeline at HistoryCommons.org to review what's already in the public record about 9/11.
Giving additional power to the Federal government, and giving up more of our inalienable rights, without accountability for why they failed to prevent 9/11 and haven't caught the Anthrax killers, is a dangerous idea- imho.

What can we do to stop this?

it sounds trite, but raising awareness by sharing information online and in the carbon world, calling your "representatives" and writing to the media can make a difference; it didn't stop the Wall Street Bailout, but it stopped the Dubai Port Security deal, and stopped the Net Neutrality-killing legislation in 2006.
Any other ideas?

We can get armed ourselves and finally take control of our own nation. The government discredited itself. Time to act, boys, and it's exactly what the government is afraid of. That's why they are rallying the troops - relying on the lazy-dumb-fattened-up portion of the population who got used to everything being served to them. Supposed terrorist attacks are just an excuse. But whatever it is - even if I am wrong about the whole thing - if we cannot protect ourselves, noone will. To arms. It is time.

messages like this i always question whether they're from sincere Citizens concerned about the subversion of the Constitution and our Human Rights, or actually from an FBI/private contractor agent provocateur fishing for patsies and trying to create "terrorists" so it appears the "war on terror" is justified.
The fact that about half of all households in the US have at least one gun owner should give fascist, treasonous scoundrels pause when they're subverting the Constitution in favor of "elite" (right, "elite", what a joke; global economic meltdown on top of $180 trillion in derivatives- and they're giving themselves "performance" bonuses) privilege and corporate power.
However, the power elite don't fear an insurrection; they fear discovery, public knowledge, lack of cooperation and organized non-violent resistance. At present, many people are still clueless and are just waiting for the job market and shopping to get jump-started by the "elite". If Obama and his "kettle of hawks" can't do it, the Republocrat Establishment may be tossed aside in favor of an unknown but more credible alternative. I trust the People will do the right thing, when enough are made aware.
Constitutional rule has been subverted; members of the power elite, including many in the Bush Administration, need to be investigated for 9/11, Afghanistan, Iraq, Katrina, warrantless wiretapping, torture, rendition, failure to stop the economic meltdown, signing statements, treason, and that's just based on some of what's publicly known already; mountains of evidence and many witnesses are currently being suppressed by the Bush Administration

Erik,
Thank you for speaking on the behalf of our constitutional freedoms! I only wish more people would wake up to the very nasty progression of policies specifically stamped out to restrict freedoms in the name of "safety" and "security"
"People willing to trade their freedom for temporary security deserve neither and will lose both."
