In the midst of Lhasa (also known as "Grounds of the Gods"), at 3,700m, the gold-clad roofs of the Potala Palace greet you from afar. A palace built by Songstsen Gampo stood on Marpori, the Red Mountain in the 7th Century. In the 17th Century the 5th Dalai Lama extended the palace to its present size. The main construction is divided into two sections, The Red and White palaces. It includes living rooms, temples, funerals stupas and monk dormitories.
